The University is one of the leading technical education institutions in the Republic of Belarus. It provides training for the graduation of engineering personnel and higher scientific qualification personnel for such branches of industry as mechanical engineering, metallurgy, power engineering, economy, radio-electronic engineering, and information technologies. Following special permit (license) to provide educational activity issued by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus the University provides instruction in 21 specialties of the first level of higher education (for a Diploma of Higher Education), in 8 specialties of the second level of higher education ( for a Master's Degree), in 9 specialties for a Ph.D. and Doctor's Degrees, 18 specialties for retraining people with higher education and also pre-University training for students of high and high specialized education institutions. In 2012 the University was granted the status of the scientific institution.

Medical servicing of students is provided at two first aid stations equipped with all necessary equipment. There are two cafes (140 places) and a cafeteria for students and employees and two cafeterias at the students' hostels. Sports facilities of the University include games and training halls, open sports grounds, gym halls.

The University library stocks over 550 000 volumes of literature and enable the subscription to scientific journals. Electronic catalogs of the library, electronic library, and other databases are offered to the users of the University's local computer network. The library also provides users access to the Internet resources and full-text databases of scientific periodicals.

The University has its publishing center, which provides publishing educational, scientific, popular science, production-practical, and reference literature and making forms and other polygraphic products. It also enables to sell by retail books, magazines, journals, and stationery articles. Scientific and practical journal "Vestnik of the Sukhoi State Technical University of Gomel" included on the list of Supreme Certification Commission for publishing dissertation thesis in engineering for higher degrees is published. The University newspaper "Sushka" is printed presenting the material reflecting the University's life and its departments.

The University participates in governmental and intercollege scientific and technical programs. It is involved in cooperation in the fields of education and science with the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (the city of Trieste, Italy) Trieste and Padua Universities, Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (the city of Doubna, Russia), Institute for Low Temperatures and Structural Study of the Polish Academy of Science (the city of Wroclaw, Poland), the National Technical University of Ukraine' Kiev Polytechnic Institute" and several other foreign establishments and educational institutions.

Biannual International Scientific and Technical Conference "Present-Day Problems of Engineering Science" is held at the University, representing accurate readings in memory of P.O.Sukhoi. Additionally, International Conferences "Mentality of Slavs," "Strategy and Tactics of Developing Production and Economic Systems," and others are held periodically.

The University's international activity aims to integrate with the world educational and scientific community and improve the educational process and research quality by the following:

  • Development of ties and relations of the University with partner Universities utilizing students' and instructors' academic exchange.
  • Enhancement of scientific cooperation with foreign counterparts.
  • Implementing joint research projects and holding events.
  • Information and methodic scientific works exchange.

The Sukhoi State Technical University of Gomel has over 60 cooperation agreements with higher education institutions and research institutions in foreign countries: Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Poland, Italy, Macedonia and other. Under the agreements and contracts on cooperation concluded, joint educational and cultural projects are implemented, student exchange is arranged, the University employees are sent for research and study stays, joint research is arranged, instructors of the partner higher education institutions deliver lectures and classes to the University students.

The University is a member of the three International associations:

  1. International Association of Slavonic Higher Education Institutions (coordinating countries are Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine) including 18 higher education institutions was established in 2000 at the initiative of the coordinating higher education institutions of the three countries: Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine further joined by Moldova, Transdniestria, and Yugoslavia. The Association's purpose is to establish mutually beneficial scientific, educational and cultural relations and friendship between research and educational teams, social organizations, students, researchers, and instructors of higher education institutions of independent states tied by historical and intellectual values common for all the people of these countries.
  2. International Association of Border Regions' Higher Education Institutions of Belarus (Vitebsk, Gomel, and Mogilev) and Russia (Briansk, Pskov, and Smolensk) - was established in April 2006. Guided by the aspiration for all-round development of mutually beneficial scientific, educational and cultural relations, mutual understanding and friendship between research and educational teams, social organizations, students, researchers and instructors of higher education institutions of fraternal nations on April 4, 2006, the Agreement on International Cooperation between higher education institutions and other educational institutions of border regions of Belarus (Vitebsk, Gomel, and Mogilev) and Russia (Briansk, Pskov, and Smolensk) was concluded. Presently 29 participants constitute the membership of the Association.
  3. The Technical Universities Association was established in 1993 on the initiative of Russia's leading technical universities based on the technical universities section of the Eurasia Universities Association. The Association is a non-commercial organization that represents the voluntary and open union of the technical universities. The Association conducts active policy aimed at unifying the efforts of states, educational institutions, organizations, and enterprises in the sphere of realizing the priority of constant development of higher engineering education based on ideas of progressive learning and the best traditions of higher engineering education. The Association includes 148 members, including 93 technical universities, six federal universities (Russian Federation), 19 national research universities, ten classical universities, three academies and polytechnic institutes, three militaries higher educational establishments. The Association includes 13 universities from the CIS independent states, including the Sukhoi State Technical University of Gomel.
