The French school in Johannesburg was founded in the 1960s, but due to circumstances at the time, had to shut doors, only to reopen with a very small group of 17 students in 1970.

Public pre-school (cycle 1) is specific to France and Children from the age of 3 years old can join the pre-school until their compulsory schooling starts at age 6. The objective of pre-school is to assist each child gain autonomy and appropriate the knowledge and skills required to achieve success in the cycle of fundamental learning (grades 1 and 2). Classes are structured into three sections, small, middle, and upper sections according to the children’s ages and each of these sections has three classes.

To facilitate the big leap to 1st grade, the Lycée Jules Verne observes a bridging period during which upper section students are prepared for and become familiar with 1st grade. From April, 1st-grade teachers teach upper section students once a week in small groups (half the class). This enables pre-school students to discover the class and the teachers that will be teaching them the following year and also allows teachers to assess the level of their future students even before the start of 1st grade.

At pre-school, the child establishes relationships with children as well as with adults. They use and develop their motor, sensory, emotional, relational, and intellectual skills. They gradually become a student and discover the written word.

Due to the growing demand from parents in Pretoria also wanting to educate their children in French, a second Gauteng-based French campus, Miriam Makeba was established in Pretoria in 2001. The school’s primary focus is to prepare students for international challenges. From nursery school to 12th grade (terminal) our school currently educates more than 1200 students from over 60 nationalities.

In Middle School, three cycles spread over four grades, punctuate students’ education:

  • The adaptation cycle in 6ème (grade 6), which essentially aims at consolidating the knowledge acquired in primary school
  • The central cycle in 5ème (grade 7) and 4ème (grade 😎 is when students learn the fundamental knowledge and skills of the cycle 1
  • The orientation cycle in 3ème (grade 9) prepares students for their subject and orientation choice in the second general or professional cycle

Moving from one cycle to the next is done according to orientation/subject levels. A grade meeting meets after each term and advises on a student’s advancement from one level to the next. The principal releases the orientation decision.

International-oriented, the Lycée Jules Verne strictly upholds the values of the French educational system and the curriculum is in line with the French educational system (religious neutrality and respect of the different cultures). Further to this, the school is registered with the French Agency for French Teaching Abroad.

Conveniently situated, the campus in Johannesburg can host students throughout their school career, nursery year (petite section, grade 000) to Grade 12, and the Pretoria campus host students from nursery year through to Grade 5 (CM2).

Bilingual teaching not only provides our students with the tools they need to become successful in the global society, but it also creates a tremendously stimulating educational environment and is synonymous with academic excellence beyond mere language proficiency.

Students that are educated in a bilingual environment often show increased listening skills, better memory, and become more sophisticated thinkers. It further increases students’ knowledge and value of other cultures. At the Lycée Français Jules Verne, the French curriculum is implemented in both English and French.

As the performance of each of the students is of utmost importance to the school, bilingual teaching is adapted on an individual basis to strengthen and develop command of the French language so that they will have the option of furthering their education on a tertiary level in either of these languages. Further to this, the school will increase education in English to the students that have mastered French to the required level.
