Welcome to the academic year 2017-18. In this new school year of learning and growing, we will aim at setting and reaching attainable goals while working harder and smarter by taking our school and student achievement to the next level.
Melaka International School (MIS) was the brainchild of Allahyarham the late, Dr. Mohamed Ishak Syed Ahmed, and his wife Mrs. Shamsunnisa Ishak. MIS was established in early 1993 with the support of the State Economic Development Corporation and The Melaka Foundation, modeled on the British school system. The School was located in Jalan Taming Sari and had a modest beginning with two kindergarten students. It, later on, offered elementary and secondary education. With an increased number of students and teachers, it moved to a bigger site on Jalan Kubu.
In 2004, work began on a present five-acre site at Taman Siantan in Tengkera with a vision to have a school with a world-class infrastructure while incorporating features to create awareness in global warming. Two acres of the land have been converted into an organic farm with features like solar energy power, a rainwater retention pond to recycle water, recycling of organic waste, and organic fertilizer.
Being the first Green School in Malaysia, classrooms are designed with state-of-the-art architecture for comfort and to maximize the output of both students and teachers. The classroom size is optimum, designed for no more than 25 students. Furniture and classroom ambiance is a result of careful planning. Cheerful colors, balanced lighting, and careful positioning of workspaces contribute to the overall feeling of comfort. Education is integrated and activity-based. Assessment is a continuous process at Melaka International School and students are descriptively profiled on their cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills.
We have more than 5,000 books, a ratio of 36 books to each student, covering a wide range of subjects such as social sciences, Information Technology, philosophy, religion, science, and fiction in English and Bahasa Malaysia. There are also local and international magazines and local newspapers.
ICT is an integral part of educational activities in the School. Over fifty computers are placed in the Labs exclusively for students' use. These machines are supplied with state-of-the-art architectural software and broadband internet.
Science is not only knowledge but also an art. This art is explored, experimented and practiced in three Science Labs. There are three Science Labs at Melaka International School. They are equipped with resources meant for Elementary, Middle, Secondary, and Senior Secondary students. Students enjoy fun experiments: Science fair ideas, Electrical and Electronic component usage, Magical power of magnets, Light characteristics, Life science activities, Microorganism slides, Human anatomy charts, Models, Dissecting sets, and microscopes.
The MIS canteen offers fresh food all the time. Organic Vegetables are directly brought from the School's Organic farm. Based on produce, menus are designed weekly and changed to suit the requirements of the school. When planning menus, the focus is on providing variety and choice whilst stimulating the imagination and encouraging most pupils to eat a healthy meal daily.
