Notre Dame High School, Belmont is an independent Catholic college preparatory school dedicated to the educational mission of St. Julie Billiart and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Notre Dame High School was established by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1851 and moved to the historic William Ralston Estate in 1923. The school is located on 10.6 acres in Belmont, California, a professional suburban community located midway between San Francisco and San Jose.
We are a caring and compassionate community committed to promoting justice and peace while developing responsible young women of active faith, strong intellect, and Christian leadership. We develop the gifts and talents of each student and foster Gospel values in an environment of academic excellence and mutual respect.
The school draws its student body principally from San Mateo County. Families of the school reflect middle to upper-middle-class economic backgrounds. Of the 440 students, 8.6% are international students. The student/teaching faculty ratio is 9.3:1, and the student/teaching faculty and professional staff ratio are 7.5:1. The average class size is 19.04. 92% of students from the class of 2016 enrolled in a 4-year college, while 8% went to community college.
Our classes will challenge each young woman in a supportive environment that celebrates intellectual risk-taking, demands reflective learning, and pushes each student to become problem-solvers for the 21st century. Notre Dame High School is fully Accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
Notre Dame High School, Belmont graduation requirements provide students with the necessary credits and variety of courses needed for admission to the University of California campuses, California State Universities, and private and out-of-state colleges and universities. Notre Dame High School requires that students must take a minimum of 60 credits per year for graduation.
Notre Dame’s Counseling Department strives to create a climate of care that nurtures the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual development of each student. Counselors serve as advocates for students and assist them in becoming responsible, independent lifelong learners. We teach students to be accountable for their academic future.
By adopting a cross-platform policy for student-provided laptops, parents have a wide range of purchase options to meet their family preferences and budgetary needs. Parents can choose between the Apple or Windows operating systems with prices for PC laptops beginning at approximately $329.
All laptops need to meet the school's minimum system requirements. We only ask that students be equipped with laptops rather than Chromebooks or tablets. The reason for this is that while these devices have their own strengths and benefits, they do not allow students to download software. In addition, our campus printers do not support Chromebooks or mobile devices. Thus, laptops are the best all-around learning tool for our students.
Our 1+1 technology program supports the Notre Dame de Namur Learning Community Hallmark Seven which states, "We develop holistic learning communities which educate for life" and reflects our fidelity to the directive of St. Julie Billiart, our Foundress, "Teach your students whatever is necessary to equip them for life."
The Spiritual Life Program at Notre Dame High School strives to provide open, loving, and sacred moments where every student can explore who and where God is in her life. Informed by the teachings of the Catholic tradition and inspired by the charism of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, our goal is to help our students learn what they need to know for life – which includes opportunities to form and inform their heart, as well as their minds.
We welcome all students – no matter what faith tradition. In a common search for the truth, we encourage dialogue in the hopes of listening for God’s goodness in the life experiences of all. In tandem with Notre Dame’s academic program, we provide students the opportunity to experience God’s goodness through communal prayer and liturgy, meaningful retreats, our community service program, and unique immersion experiences.
