Tohoku International School is located in Sendai, Japan. It is a beautiful city located in the northern section of Japan’s main island of Honshu. The lifestyle is incredible, and the scenery is breathtaking. Sendai has embedded itself between Japan’s Pacific coast and its interior mountain ranges. Rice fields are scattered all around its city limits. I need to preface my welcome with these statements to help capture the immense natural beauty that is part of our school’s culture. And to top all of this off, Tohoku International School is a superb place for students to learn.
We possess a wonderful blend of talented students, supportive parents, and superb teachers. Our sense of community is one of the things that make us special and unique. The learning atmosphere at TIS is simply excellent. Students and teachers interact across the school to solve the problems they are challenged with. It is a wonderful partnership.
If you have never visited this part of the world, I encourage you to do so. And while you are here, please visit Tohoku International School. We will help make your stay an enjoyable one. I guarantee your children will receive an excellent education.
Tohoku International School provides a comprehensive academic program from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 for foreign and Japanese families who seek a quality, challenging education in English for their children. Tohoku International School has been serving the educational needs of the Sendai community for almost fifty years. Our school has a rich history, from our early days as a school for the children of Christian missionary families we have transformed both in name and student diversity, from Sendai American School to Sendai Christian Academy and back to Sendai American School, and finally, to Tohoku International School in 1997 to more accurately reflect our international composition and mission.
Tohoku International School is accredited by both the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), an internationally recognized organization based in the United States) and by the Japanese Ministry of Education (Gakko Hojin).
TIS is sponsored by Nanko Gakuen Corporation since 1988 and governed in conjunction with the TIS Council, an advisory board composed of the Head of School and representatives from the business, government, educational communities, and TIS stakeholders. The TIS Council works closely with the Nanko Gakuen Corporation Board of Directors to develop school policies and operational procedures.
At Tohoku International School our core values, or whole school learning goals, are promoted through our uniquely developed 5 STARS. The STARS essentially form the backbone of all programs offered here and we consider these attributes to be critical for the development of the whole child into caring global citizens. All students, parents, and teachers are expected to adhere to the principles presented through the STARS.
Students should develop a passion for learning. They should strive to improve in their knowledge and understanding of the world in which they live. Students should seek to solve problems by finding solutions using the knowledge they have acquired. All students are encouraged to be open-minded in all their endeavors. Holding respect for others regardless of nationality, age, religion or ethnicity is paramount to forming healthy relationships with peers within the international community at the school and beyond. Students are encouraged to consider perspectives and be open to other opinions and values.
There is a high expectation that all students behave and act responsibly across many contexts and settings. Taking ownership and responsibility for oneself and one's belongings is important. All students are encouraged to be excellent role models to others through doing the right thing even in difficult circumstances. Contributing to efforts to make a change to major world issues of an environmental, humanitarian, ecological, or economic nature is highly valued.
