The International School of Brescia is founded on the highest of educational standards and international values. It is a co-educational day school for kindergarten and primary school students (Italian and foreign, from 36 months and above). The IS Brescia is not a language school, but a school whose program is taught in English. Located in the municipality of Botticino, six kilometers from the heart of Brescia, it features an old-world charm counterbalanced by the latest in modern educational facilities.
IS Brescia offers the Primary Years Programme and the Middle Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate Organization. Its internationally recognized curriculum is given in English with an additional 1 hour of the Italian language provided daily. A third language – Spanish – is offered to start from Grade 5. Limited class sizes and state-of-the-art Apple® One-to-One technology foster the development of inquiry-based learning and achievement. Housed within a former 17th-century Catholic seminary, IS Brescia’s appeal is all new. Full-sized classrooms, an indoor play area, library, dining facility, and outdoor play park provide a pleasant, enriching internationally-minded environment in which to learn and grow.
Our educational approach is based on full immersion in the English language so that students can become bilingual. Being bilingual means having the capacity to use two languages competently without relying on translation from one language to another. The world-renowned researcher Barry McLaughlin explains in his work “Theories of second-language Learning” that constant and intensive exposure to a second language is the only real way to achieve bilingualism.
When a child encounters a new foreign language, he or she will experience communication difficulties initially. During this time the child absorbs the new sounds of the language and begins to interpret the meaning of keywords and phrases used in the school environment. Once this fundamental vocabulary has been learned, the child will be able to interact verbally with other students and teachers, building confidence and making visible progress on a day-to-day basis. Brescia provides an ideal situation for children to improve their language skills and learn in an international environment.
