If you do not live in the London Borough of Merton, please apply using your home Borough's Common Application Form, even if you are applying for a Merton school. Once a place at Stanford has been offered, a mutual time for a home visit will be arranged so that we can get to know your child and family before they start. We pride ourselves on helping children to have a smooth transition to Stanford by working closely with parents and carers.
Early education provides an opportunity for your child to learn and play with other children in a safe and structured environment, helping to give them a head start when they begin school. Nursery children have a staggered intake to ensure children settle quickly and have a stress-free start to their Early Years education. Having a place in the Nursery does not guarantee a place in the Reception.
Children are eligible to start in Reception in the September of the school year in which they turn five years old (the school year runs from 1 September to 31 August).
At Stanford, we offer our children a creative and thematic primary curriculum that has been personalized and adapted from the Cornerstones curriculum to meet our school and children’s needs. This curriculum is based on the outcomes for all subjects within the National Curriculum.
The curriculum follows four phases: Engage, Develop, Innovate, and Express. At each stage of their learning, children are challenged to develop new knowledge and skills across the curriculum and demonstrate this using a variety of mediums. Our mission is to teach a vibrant and creative curriculum that puts children at its heart, excites their imaginations, inspires them to learn, extends their horizons, deepens their understanding, and meets their intellectual and personal needs.
Stanford Primary School is a co-educational community school for children aged between three and eleven years (Nursery to Year 6). It is situated in a residential area in Norbury not far from Mitcham Common. The school was opened in 1973 and was originally a middle school before becoming a Primary School.
Stanford has well-resourced primary classrooms, a newly refurbished library, a dedicated computer suite, and a purpose-built gym for sporting activities. There are spacious and purpose-built Nursery and Reception classrooms with their designated play area. The school also has a large playing field and a woodland area with a pond which is home to a variety of wildlife and minibeasts, and trees that have been planted by the children and wider community over the years.
The pupil premium grant is provided to schools based on the number of children who are eligible for free school meals or who have been eligible in the past 6 years. The grant is given by the DfE and enables schools to provide additional opportunities to support children's learning and enrichment opportunities.
At Stanford Primary School we aim to produce healthy, enthusiastic children, who are willing to try new sports and initiatives to compete and enjoy sports at any level. To achieve this, we offer coaches at break times to encourage pupils to participate in a fun and competitive manner, within a safe, friendly environment. There is also a range of physical after-school clubs available, such as multi-sports, football, and tennis. Great opportunities to develop team skills and positive mental attitudes towards sport. In addition to this provision, we also hold the Silver Award for sport, from our work with the Merton Schools Partnership. This allows us to enter interschool competitions and develop our staff training when necessary.
At Stanford Primary we adhere to both local and national policies and guidelines to safeguard children and young people. All schools in Merton are supported with their duty to safeguarding pupils by a linked Social Worker from Merton's Vulnerable Children's Team (VCT). Our linked Social Worker is Kay Dove. Together the school can discuss and offer appropriate early help to children and their families.
Being a parent is an amazing job however it can also be tough at times. At Stanford, we are proud to have several staff with a wide range of skills and experience who can offer help and advice when needed. Claire is also available weekly at 'Chill and Chat' where families can access friendship and support from each other. We are currently running at Stanford the weekly 'Parent Gym' course.
