St. Edward's is a Catholic Voluntary Aided Primary School, which has served the Parish of Our Lady of Compassion, Upton Park since 1902. Initially, the school was located in Castle Street and suffered major damage during World War 2, which resulted in the school being rebuilt in 1949. The school was again relocated in September 2000 to the present site in Green Street, as part of West Ham United Football Club's Redevelopment Programme.

St. Edward's Nursery opened in April 2001. Children between the ages of 3 to 11 years now attend this new two-form entry school.

We are a two-form entry Voluntary Aided Catholic school for children aged 3 to 11, situated on Green Street in the diverse community of East London. St Edward’s was also designated as a National Teaching School in March 2013.

All staff is dedicated to the welfare and education of those who attend St Edward’s. The staff work closely as a team and are well supported by the Governing Body. All staff work to support the Schools ‘Vision & Values’, which are integrated into the ethos of the school.

Pupils undergo teacher assessments on a termly basis across the curriculum, as well as using PIRA and PUMA tests for Reading, GPS, and Maths. For Writing children are assessed every 6 weeks following the BIG Writing assessment criteria, and for Yr 2 and Yr 6 using the assessment interims. Yr 6 also practices past SAT papers throughout the year. Reports on children’s progress are given out regularly at Parent Consultation Evenings and an annual report is sent out at the end of each academic year. Results from National Tests are published each year.

The school and parish maintain our sense of community by giving strength and support to each other. Members of the parish nurture our pupils by running Sacramental preparation Classes. In addition, links are formed through joint worship and also through social events. Pupils attend Mass, with the Parish on a rota basis each Tuesday, and school Mass is held at the start and the end of each term. Holidays of Obligation are also celebrated by attending Mass with the Parish.

At St Edward’s, we actively model and promote democracy within our school, and this is achieved in a variety of ways, to ensure that our pupils are equipped to fulfill their responsibilities as citizens of a democracy and develop an application to value to how lucky they are living in a democratic society. At St Edward’s, we actively model and promote the rule of law within our school, and this is achieved in a variety of ways, to ensure that our pupils comprehend why rules and laws are necessary for their classes and our school and across society as a whole.

At St Edward’s, we actively model and promote individual liberty, by providing opportunities for pupils to become positive and emotionally resilient with the knowledge and confidence to stand by their convictions, whilst also respecting others. Through our provision of a safe learning environment, which enables us to educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely. Our pupils are encouraged to understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and learn how they can do so safely, during E-Safety and Circle Time sessions.

We at St Edward’s, are a multicultural school, united by our Catholic faith. We actively model and promote the Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs by providing opportunities to learn about other cultures, as we appreciate British traditions and customs, through the themed assembly. Assemblies and discussions involving prejudices and prejudice-based bullying have been further developed by supported learning in Black History Month, Geography, RE, and PSHE and promote global citizenship. Members of different faiths or religions are encouraged to share their knowledge and experiences to enhance learning within classes and the school. In our annual International Week, we celebrate the cultural diversity of our school community. We value the diverse ethnic backgrounds of all pupils and families and undertake a variety of events and lessons to celebrate these.
