St Mary's is a Catholic primary school in which everyone is valued as a member of God's family. Our school has existed on this site since 1861 and we are proud of its long tradition of high-quality Catholic education.
St Mary’s is a one-and-a-half-form entry school admitting 45 children each year. The two Reception classes and the classes in Year 1 and Year 2 usually have 22 or 23 children in each. Throughout the rest of the school, the children are organized into classes of about 30. There are currently six classes in the Junior Department, covering Years 3 to 6 and forming what is known as Key Stage 2. Some of these classes have children from two age groups that work together.
Throughout the school children are provided with additional help in English and other curriculum areas according to their individual needs. In Key Stage 2, we can provide children with invaluable additional help in mathematics by teaching them in smaller ability-based groups.

St Mary's School is committed to providing the best possible education for all children and to developing each child's full potential. The teachings of Christ inform all our efforts and how we treat one another. We seek to provide an orderly, stimulating environment in which effort and personal success are rewarded, special gifts are catered for and needs are met.
Following The Department for Education, we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races, and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.
At St Mary’s we offer a range of groups to support children in addition to the work they are doing in class. These can be informal and determined by the class teacher for example if your child has found a particular concept difficult in class they may be taken for further support in this area.
Some groups are run on a more formal and regular basis. These are led by a teaching assistant and may include help with speech and language, social skills, self-esteem, or an area of learning such as phonics. If your child is in a regular group, you will be informed by their class teacher. Occasionally, other children may also be invited to take part in an intervention group to support their peers by modeling good speaking and listening skills or modeling positive behavior strategies.

As a Catholic school, we aim to build a caring and supportive Christian community where each individual can grow in faith and understanding. We recognize that each child is a unique individual with his/her contribution to making to the life of the school.
