Welcome to St Martin of Porres Catholic Primary School. St. Martin of Porres Catholic Primary School seeks to create a stimulating environment and a happy, caring community where each person grows in knowledge and love. St. Martin of Porres Catholic Primary School is a Roman Catholic Primary School providing schooling for children between the ages of 3 and 11 years.
The School is a one-form entry school, having one class of children for each of the seven-year groups in the primary range of 5 - 11 years. The School also has a Nursery class of 3 - 4-year-old children.
As a Roman Catholic school, we believe that Jesus is at the heart of our learning, values, and beliefs. By living our faith every day, we will see Jesus in each other, loving one another and fostering forgiveness.
We aim to create a stimulating environment by valuing and celebrating our gifts and talents given to us by God the Father. Active and enjoyable learning takes place in our friendly and secure school.
The Holy Spirit works in us to develop the community of St. Martin of Porres that celebrates diversity and welcomes and appreciates each person. We value the relationship that exists between home, school, and parish and continually work to strengthen our links with the wider community.
At St. Martin of Porres Catholic Primary School, we try to ensure that all pupils receive a broad and balanced education that is relevant to their needs, meets national requirements, and will be enjoyable.
Although the curriculum is initially divided into subject areas, much of the teaching and learning is integrated into a thematic or topic approach, since the child needs to understand and make sense of the world around him or her which is both complex and inter-related.
It is expected that much of the curriculum will be about knowledge and the acquisition and development of skills. Each child will be encouraged to observe closely, to develop logical reasoning and be encouraged to make decisions and to reflect on past experiences when making decisions.
The development of English in speaking and listening, reading, and writing is some of the primary concerns of the School. However, it is not limited to specific English lessons there are many opportunities across the school curriculum. The children are encouraged to speak and discuss, articulate their ideas, and express their points of view with clarity and precision. They are encouraged to read widely and avidly for pleasure and information. It is hoped that they will learn to read fluently and accurately with understanding and expression.
It is expected that each child will be taught to write legibly and that he or she will fulfill their potential in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and handwriting.
The written language will arise from a variety of purposes, such as the relating of personal experiences, stories, poems, descriptive accounts, letters, and the ordering and recording of information.
The mathematics curriculum, which follows the National Curriculum for Mathematics, encourages children to form mathematical concepts, acquire skills, and explore how these can be applied to everyday situations.
