St George’s School is a prominent all-girls day and boarding school set in parkland in the heart of historic Edinburgh.

Established in 1888 by the pioneers of women’s education, St George’s is Scotland’s largest all-girls school and the only all-through independent private school in Edinburgh for girls aged 2 to 18. In the late nineteenth century, the founders of St George's School campaigned for equality in education. They believed that equality for women could be achieved only by equal opportunities in education. St George’s was set up by them with the precise intention of educating young women so that they might enter Higher Education and the professions.

Today our Founders' far-sighted ideas still influence the school and help to shape the way we work.

Although we’re a thoroughly modern school, our Chaucerian motto is as relevant today as it has ever been and it continues to inform our values and school ethos.

With a Junior School size of about 200 girls (and a whole school of 800), St George’s is relatively small. Our girls receive more teacher attention than they might get elsewhere, but the school is big enough at the top end to be enormously flexible, especially where subject and course choice is concerned.

Learning in a global context has been highly valued at St George’s for many years. Living in an environment with girls from different cultures and backgrounds broadens our students' views and prepares them for the real world.

Set among beautiful parklands on a single-site campus, St George’s provides an excellent learning environment in the west of the City of Edinburgh. It is set in 15 acres of attractive landscaped grounds in the highly desirable leafy suburbs of the Ravelston and Murrayfield residential areas of the city.

There are three distinctive parts of the campus: the Junior School, which also houses the Nursery, the Lower School on the Lansdowne Site, and the Upper School (which includes Sixth Form Secondary 5 - Secondary 6).

The school moved to its present site in 1914 into a purpose-built building designed by the architect Balfour Paul. Our buildings combine traditional and modern design to support a dynamic, innovative, and high-quality learning environment for our whole community.

Key facilities include science laboratories, music center including auditorium, art and textiles center, drama studios, indoor sports hall and astroturf, ICT and design technology center, food technology center, and cafeteria-style catering facilities as well as a multi-purpose venue for special events and celebrations.
