Welcome to St George the Martyr Church of England Primary School. We provide a caring, stable and intellectually, and creatively stimulating environment where all children can develop to their full and individual potential. The staff are passionate about ensuring your child’s time at school is happy, productive, and successful so that they can move confidently onto the next stage of their education and ultimately make a positive contribution to society as adults.

St George the Martyr is a voluntary aided school with deep Christian roots. The origin of the school lies with the church of St George the Martyr, Queen’s Square. This was built as a proprietary chapel in 1705 – 1706 by a group including Sir Streynsham Master and Robert Nelson.

In 1710, the Charity School of St George the Martyr came into being on two floors of the Church’s Vestry House in Cosmo Place. The school was moved to its present site in 1976 and underwent a major refurbishment in 2006.

As a Church school, we enjoy close links with St George’s Church, and Christian values of Determination, Friendship, Inspiration, Community, Excellence, and Respect underpin all that we do in the school. A member of the clergy takes assembly once a week and the children take part in services at St George’s Church at Christian festivals throughout the year.

We aim to foster a positive attitude towards homework and help set good habits for Secondary School. We ensure that homework is of interest to the children and matched to their ability. Our school policy on homework is based on the notion that the learning process does not begin and end at school. We believe that children are learning constantly from a variety of adults and experiences. We ask that parents support their child with any homework given.

Homework is set throughout the school by DfE guidelines. Homework routines begin in Reception with the expectation that children read at home every night. From Year 1 onwards, children are also given weekly maths and literacy activities. Homework is handed out on a Friday and is expected to be returned to school by Wednesday each week.

We have a nursery of 18 full-time places for children aged 3 – 4. Children start school in the year that they turn 5 in our Reception class until age 11 in Year 6. Our classes have a maximum size of 30 children.
