Holly Park is a larger than average school situated in Friern Barnet. Initially built as a small junior school in 1908, our school has grown into a two-form entry school with over 500 pupils. At Holly Park, every individual is valued for who they are and what they contribute to the school. Values are intended to support the personal, social, and spiritual development of every pupil throughout the school.
At Holly Park, we believe that children deserve the best possible chances in life and therefore we encourage strong links with parents. We are a friendly, caring school with high expectations for all our pupils. Whilst the school is often a hive of activity, the staff work to provide a calm, stimulating environment with good behavior and mutual respect.
Although we do not seem to have a particularly large site, our grounds are used well, and we have lots of space. We have grassy areas, hard surface playgrounds, and an all-weather sports area. We have three playground areas – one for the Early Years (Nursery and Reception) one for the Infants (Years 1 and 2) and one for the Juniors (Years 3, 4, 5, and 6). We also have an allotment and a wild area.
The school buildings reflect the history of the school and have been built at different times. The oldest part of the school dates back to 1908, while the newest part was opened in 2001. We have a hall and a dining hall, and some larger shared areas. Each classroom has an interactive whiteboard for the teachers to use, and we have four trolleys of laptops which are shared by Years 1-6. Early Years have their laptops and we also have 32 iPads.
Our school serves a suburban residential area, with good transport links to central London. A wide number of cultures, faiths, and ethnic groups are represented here, and this is a distinctive strength of the school.
Holly Park School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All appointments are subject to two satisfactory references and a satisfactory enhanced DBS check. Holly Park children go through the school feeling that it is a happy and stimulating place in which they feel confident and valued. They should leave it not only having fulfilled their personal best in terms of academic results but also equipped to progress to the next stage of their lives with confidence, enthusiasm, and the values of truth, compassion, generosity, and optimism.
The whole staff team, parents, and pupils are involved in promoting values and recognizing where others are ‘living the values. The values developed have been selected after consultation with pupils, staff, governors, and parents as values that are important within the school community and which will be important throughout life. At Holly Park, we recognize that during recent years a great deal of national and local effort has been rightly directed towards school improvement and curriculum development. However, we also believe that Values Education has a crucial role in education because it plays a part in raising achievement and it encourages pupils to be emotionally intelligent, articulate learners. Values support quality teaching and learning, whilst making a positive contribution to the development of a fair, just, and civil society.
We want our children to demonstrate an understanding of the range of different cultures within the school “and further afield” as preparation for life in modern Britain. We encourage children to participate in and respond positively to a range of artistic, musical, sporting, mathematical, technological, scientific, and cultural opportunities. We provide opportunities for children to experience and respond positively to the languages, food, music, artifacts, and cultural practices of different and diverse communities present and past. We encourage children to show an interest in exploring cultural diversity and show positive responses towards different religions, ethnic and socio-economic groups in the local, national and global communities.
