We are proud to introduce Edith Kay Independent School, a specialist school for young people aged between 14-19. The official opening of Edith Kay and our preliminary Ofsted visit represented the culmination of a year’s work for a team of dedicated SEN leaders who have built their careers over many years within the field of special and inclusive education.
At Edith Kay, we warmly welcome learners with special educational needs. We strive to offer a holistic and nurturing curriculum that will challenge, enrich and motivate our young people whilst instilling a lifelong love of learning. Our ethos is clear – ‘We find and nurture each young person’s unique spark’.
We prepare our young people for an enriched future, where they can experience success and where they can contribute positively to society.
We are a small, nurturing school for learners with EHCP’s. All of the learners here at Edith Kay will have barriers to learning which may have prevented them from engaging fully in mainstream schooling. We also have particular expertise in supporting learners who are, or who have been, in care. We strive to re-engage pupils with the process of learning and to rebuild their confidence where the journey so far has been a rough one.
Local authorities may refer young people with EHCPs throughout Key stages 4 and 5 to Edith Kay. We offer bespoke education for learners in a range of innovative ways. We also work in partnership with many mainstream schools, supporting them to help keep young people on roll who are at risk of losing their places. Also, we offer various respite packages tailored around the needs of the young person and their school. We welcome inquiries from families, schools, external agencies, organizations, or young people directly. We are happy to arrange visits so that our facilities can be viewed.
We have also successfully created a platform for parents and carers who are struggling to support their young people at home. We meet on a termly basis to offer guidance as well as signposting them to outreach services and professionals who can offer long-term support and advice.
Students at Edith Kay Independent school are taught in a variety of ways, according to their individual needs. All students will have morning and afternoon registrations together, as this is a vital opportunity for them to reflect on their successes and to interact positively with staff and peers. One lesson a week is dedicated to Personal, Social, Health, and Careers Education.
There are five teaching sessions per day plus time for registration and breaks. We actively encourage our young people to attend educational trips and excursions into the local community as well as to undertake work experience where appropriate. All curriculum areas are unpinned by our nurturing ethos and we aim to instill a lifelong love of learning by finding the activities and interests that will motivate each learner, thus making the learning relevant to their own life experiences.
