Our track record in the exam hall and the abilities of our boys and girls have earned us an excellent reputation at many of London’s most prestigious senior schools.
We also aim to cultivate the right blend of social skills and confidence in our boys and girls. After all, which of us hasn’t encountered the power of confidence in our school and working lives? We believe that it is this quality – coupled with the high expectations we have of our children – that explains the consistent success of our older children in the exam room and readies them for further success in their future academic careers. Parents send their children to Charterhouse Square School because we offer superb preparation for senior school within a friendly and supportive environment. Year after year our girls and boys leave with much-coveted places at some of London’s finest schools and the personal skills necessary to make the most of the opportunities they have earned. Charterhouse Square School has a character and ethos all of its own. Perhaps it’s something to do with our central location or the surprising space and color we enjoy across our two neighboring buildings. Perhaps it’s that our children don’t wear a school uniform and that they stay together with the same classmates through school from entry to nursery. Or perhaps it’s something to do with the happy atmosphere around the place – where it’s not unusual for our teachers to stay in post for well over a decade, and for our girls and boys to come back for a visit long after they have left the school.
These are characteristics that combine to make the school a special place. We are known for our academic success – and that is a source of great pride to us – but we care more about the safe, nurturing environment that makes this success possible. That’s why we place so much emphasis on schemes such as our ‘buddy’ system, for example, which sees each new girl and boy paired up with one of the pupils from the top of the school. And it explains why we are all – pupils and teachers – known by our first names: it makes the teachers so much more approachable and creates that all-important home-from-home feel.
Our success is not down to chance – or a selective entry policy. It’s no coincidence that our nursery children are taught by highly qualified teachers who have more than enough skill and know-how to teach our oldest children. We simply will not compromise on teaching excellence – so much so that we have a policy of not using supply teachers or even lunchtime supervisors. We also follow a curriculum designed to ensure that every class in the school is operating a year ahead of what is expected for their age group. Further up the school, we recognize that the most crucial period comes in Years 4 and 5 when the children do the bulk of their exam preparation. That’s why we treat these two classes – Balloon and Kite – as one double year group, making sure that the same teachers guide the children through this important phase of their education. It’s an approach that we know raises standards for all the children.
We expect a great deal from our boys and girls. We believe that children respond well to being challenged and extended, as long as they feel comfortable and supported. We also encourage each child – even from an early age – to take responsibility for their learning. We teach them to be self-motivated, inquisitive, and independent – managing their homework and remembering to bring in everything they need each day. It’s all part of giving them the confidence and resilience to push beyond their comfort zones and keep reaching for even greater success.
At break time, lunchtime and after school, you can find our children engaged in an unusually wide range of extracurricular clubs, designed to help them identify and develop their talents and interests. At Finsbury Leisure Centre, Golden Lane, or Coram’s Fields you will see our girls and boys swimming, working on their netball, football, and tennis skills, or sampling badminton, volleyball, handball, and dodge ball in our Multi-Sports Club. And back at school, we have clubs for table tennis, judo, and chess – with the last taught by grandmaster Aaron Summerscale.
At other times you might hear the sound of our Recorder and Music Clubs in action, our Choir rehearsing for the Christmas Service or summer production, and the scene-stealing antics of one of our two Drama Clubs. Elsewhere you might come across children preparing food in the Cookery Club, exploring new techniques in the Art Club, working on their posture in Ballet Club, or producing the school newspaper in ICT Club.
