Our rich and varied curriculum and high expectations of children ensure that everyone can be the best they can. Our vision statement highlights our commitment to providing all our children with the opportunity and encouragement to excel and achieve success in a stimulating and safe environment.
The excellent relationships and teamwork between different members of the school community, whilst keeping children’s learning central to everything that we do, is what we feel makes our school special. We are very proud of our outstanding Ofsted grade (May 2012) and we strive to ensure we set the highest standards, both pastorally and academically, possible.
At Bishop Perrin, learning and teaching are in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum 2014. We take a thematic approach to learning and teaching, with children learning through the context of a new theme each half term. A cross-curricular approach is taken for the majority of curriculum subjects, with only RE, Maths, Computing, French and PE taught as discrete subjects.
At Bishop Perrin, we follow a comprehensive phonics program in KS1 that we have developed in line with the Letters and Sounds program, which has been adapted to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum 2014. As part of the teaching of reading, we use a variety of reading resources including reading books from Oxford Reading Tree, Collins Big Cat, Pearson, and Project X reading schemes.
At Bishop Perrin, we believe that the most fundamental use of assessment is to build pupils’ understanding and improve their learning within day-to-day lessons. Please read our current assessment policy to understand more about how we assess children’s attainment and progress. For each year group, we have ‘non-negotiables’ that outline key expectations and provide information about the skills that are required at each milestone.
At Bishop Perrin, we have a wonderfully welcoming school library that is stocked with a wide range of books from a variety of authors. Children have a timetabled visit to the library each week and the library is open at lunchtimes for the children to visit, browse the books and chat with our friendly librarian. All children are encouraged to regularly borrow books from the library, in addition to the reading scheme books they are reading.
We offer a wide range of Extra-Curricular Clubs for children of all ages. Clubs can be held before school, during lunchtime, and after school and include sports, languages, gardening, cookery, and arts and crafts. The clubs on offer change each term and parents need to complete an application form to apply for places at clubs before the start of a new term. Clubs that are run by staff are free (although some of these clubs will make a small charge for materials/resources) whilst clubs run by outside providers will require payment.
Bishop Perrin School Association is run by the parents and carers for all of the children at the school. We aim to raise funds in an inclusive and fun way so we can provide extra financial assistance that directly benefits the school and children and we do more than just cake sales.
The Full Governing Board meets 6 times each year. We also have three sub-committees that meet every half term. These committees do the detailed work of the Governing Board, exploring data and information presented to them by staff, and monitoring the School’s performance against its development plans.
The Business and Finance Committee looks after the budget, and monitors the financial performance of the School to make sure money is well spent. The Children, Families and Communities Committee monitors things like Safeguarding and Health and Safety, how the School engages with parents, carers, and the wider community through, for example, extracurricular activities Curriculum and Achievement Committee provides a close analysis of progress and attainment data to make sure that the School’s strategies to ensure all children achieve their potential are sound.
In addition to these three committees, the Strategic Committee, consisting of the Chair of Governors, the Headteacher, and the Chairs of each subcommittee, meets three times each year to discuss any Board related issues and to manage any work that does not fit into the remit of the other committees. The Admissions Committee also meets when required to manage School applications for each academic year. Each Governor has to undertake mandatory training when they join the Governing Board and refresh this training regularly throughout their terms. This training is done in Governor’s own time, or as part of extended full Governing Board meetings.
We also have several Governors with special responsibilities for example for Pupil Premium, Health, and Safety, or Safeguarding, and those Governors undertake extra training to ensure they are equipped to carry out these lead roles. We make sure that we have the right mix of expertise on our Governing Body. We carry out regular skills audits, identifying any training or experience that we are lacking and building capacity to make sure we do our job well.
