The Hachinohe Institute of Technology (HIT) would like to express its deepest condolences and sympathy to all those who lost family or friends in the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, 2011. Although some of our buildings suffered a little damage, HIT is now open as usual. We will continue to provide support to any of our students affected by this devastating disaster and their families.
The Hachinohe Institute of Technology (HIT) promotes technological advances and environmental and energy sustainability in the northern Tohoku region through its provision of higher-education programs, its research programs, and its outreach programs.
HIT traces its history back to the establishment of a technical high school in Hachinohe in 1956. Since the Hachinohe fishing port is a significant fishery base, the high school was established to produce maritime radio operators for the pelagic fishery. Fifteen years after its establishment, the school's board of trustees decided to make the school an institute for higher education to enhance its contribution to the region.
Hachinohe Institute of Technology was established in 1972 and has become a prominent multi-departmental teaching and research institution in engineering and design in less than fifty years, providing quality education in 'Tohoku' - the Northeast region of Japan. Among the private postgraduate-level program providers in Tohoku's northernmost region, we solely offer the doctoral degree program in engineering (mechanical, electric and electronic, system and information, biotechnology, civil engineering, and architecture).
Since its establishment in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture, in 1972, HIT has promoted technological innovation and cutting-edge design through its well-organized education system and advanced research achievements, thereby becoming one of Japan's leading undergraduate and postgraduate institutions. In close cooperation with some of the world's top universities and our regional community partners, including local governmental organizations, we will continue to contribute to technology and design development.
With a population of 230,000, the city of Hachinohe is a thriving industrial area known for fishery and manufacturing. It owes a lot to the well-managed port of Hachinohe, facing the Pacific Ocean. Hachinohe's city is conveniently located in terms of transportation, too - three hours by shinkansen and one and a half hours by plane from Tokyo. Further, it enjoys a national park's vicinity extending along the Sanriku coast from Hachinohe through Kesennuma, Miyagi, where you can enjoy the breathtaking scenic beauty and outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and BBQ. Why don't you come and touch seafood fresh from the ocean and feel the lively atmosphere at the port?
While located at the northernmost tip of Japan's main island, it has a mild climate, four seasons, and its atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of a metropolis like Tokyo.
