Cariboo Adventist Academy (CAA) is a coeducational day school that offers Kindergarten to Grade 12, located in beautiful Williams Lake, British Columbia. We are operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Churches of the Williams Lake area in conjunction with the British Columbia Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. The school operates within a Seventh-day Adventist community in the Cariboo region, but all students who desire a quality, Christian education are welcome. CAA is accredited by the Board of Regents of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and is classified as a Group 1 school (Kindergarten to Grade 12) under the BC Independent School Act.
The history of Cariboo Adventist Academy begins in the camps of lumberjacks working in the Cariboo. In 1954, Dan Basaraba and the Jacobson brothers were involved in setting up lumber camps and sawmills in areas around the Cariboo, such as Beaver Valley, Williams Lake, and Horsefly. As Seventh-day Adventists, they kept the Sabbath, and therefore, so did their businesses. The ability to work a job that did not require breaking the Sabbath attracted many other Adventists to their businesses, as well as their families, and soon there were children in need of instruction.
Church schools were opened up on an as-needed basis. In 1956, a one-room school was opened up at the Basaraba lumber camp, taught by Alice Jewkes. In 1956, after evangelistic efforts, C.S. Cooper helped found the first Seventh-day Adventist church in Williams Lake. The new church met in a rented facility, where they also operated a school Ethel Sawchuk taught in that first one-room school in Williams Lake, for the 1956-57 school year.
Grades 8 to 12 are taught by subject. Students move from room to room to accommodate the various classes that they have chosen. Most of their classes are taught in the gym complex. Students in grades 10-12 may take some of their elective courses online through West Coast Adventist School, our sister school offering a distributed learning alternative, or through GROW, a distributed learning center at School District No. 27 in Williams Lake.
Students and parents can check grades online through My Education BC. My Ed is a student information system provided by the BC Ministry of Education, which teachers use to enter grades and attendance, and is used by the province to enter marks on student transcripts. Students and parents of students in grades 10-12 may use this website to check for missing assignments or see their current progress in a course.
