Education is the basis of Taiwan's progression and teacher cultivation to the priority of it. In 1899, Taiwan elementary education thrived and required Taiwanese teachers as Public School teachers (now called elementary school teachers). Taichung Normal School was established in Changhua Wunwu Temple at the time, Taipei Normal School in Taipei Dadaocheng, and Tainan Normal School in Tainan Sanshang King Temple.
In 1943, the School was merged with Hsinchu Normal School to Taichung Teacher School (Junior College) of Taiwan Governor-General Administration.
In 1945, the government promoted the School to Taiwan Provincial Taichung Normal School. It came with a governmental movement and at the time from 1946 to 1949. formed a democratic and liberated atmosphere on campus and took the lead in upgrading the School and renamed Taiwan Provincial Junior Teachers College, which then went into the first transformation-Teacher Junior College. The school motto-loyal, firm, diligent and plain-four spirits based on Confucian culture and expected the School formed with loyal responsibility, firm perseverance, diligent conduct, and straightforward attitude.
The School was advanced to Taiwan Provincial Taichung Teachers College in 1987. Promoting educational specialized and nourishing intimate and caring teachers. In the year 1991, it had been promoted to National Taichung Teachers College and 1994, in keeping with Taiwan's diverse society. In 2000 aggressively extended the second campus, adjusted the curriculum to cultivate students' multi-capability, and upgraded the School to the National Taichung University of Education.
The University aimed at "stepping forward" and went through the next transformation by 2005. Hand in hand, they started the times of Taichung University. Integrating the past social theory with refined ideal and academic professional enabled non-teacher training students of pro-abilities and teacher training students of novel teacher spirits. Both refined specialists would make NTCU a model school of the higher academy and, in the future, the top in the region, the head in Taiwan, and a distinguished liberal arts university in the nations.
National Taichung University of Education (NTCU) is a university with a proud legacy. Its guiding principles have been "refinement, creativity, and new prospect." It emphasizes student-centered teaching, stresses both scientific and humanistic education, and advocates professionalism with critical thinking. Pursuing the goal as the locals' best, the nation's leading, and the world's famous University, NTCU expects to be excellent because of its students and expects its students to be excellent because of NTCU.
In 2005, the University renamed the National Taichung University of Education, consisting of the College of Education, College of Humanities and Liberal Arts, and College of Mathematics and Information Science. In 2008, management departments were established and would be developed for the future college of management. On the one hand, the University has taken an operational transformation to create new prospects, become competitive, and encourage diversity. On the other hand, it carries on its early mission of educating quality teachers. With such distinctive features, the School is to be an educational university of the new era.
The Department of Music and the Department of Fine Arts is planning to incorporate the digital art and creative industry to prepare students for a more challenging job market after graduation. As for providing students with work experience, the University has signed industry-academic cooperation agreements with various corporations and implemented International Part-time Employment Strategies to expand students' employment opportunities.
With the advantages in the fields of education and art, NTCU has been a leader in Taiwan's middle area. It will continue to develop features for each academic department, to expand "blue oceans" of uncontested professional areas, to be one of the nation's leading research institutes, and in the rapid process of internalization, to become a renowned world-class university finally.
