A premier university in Asia, the Singapore Management University (SMU) is internationally recognized for its world-class research and distinguished teaching. Established in 2000, SMU's mission is to generate leading-edge research with global impact and produce broad-based, creative, and entrepreneurial leaders for the knowledge-based economy. It is known for its interactive and technologically enabled pedagogy of seminar-style teaching in small-size classes.
SMU comprises six distinguished schools, each offering an undergraduate program that transforms you to your fullest potential. Postgraduate studies at SMU are tailored to groom leaders and entrepreneurs through a proven innovative teaching platform and world-class research. Continuing education courses across SMU and all fields specially developed for busy working professionals by recognized scholars and industry experts.
SMU has an emphasis on generating rigorous, high-impact, and relevant multi-disciplinary research that addresses Asian issues of global relevance; SMU faculty collaborate with leading international researchers and universities from the USA, Europe, China, and India as well as with partners in the business community and public sector, through its research institutes, centers, and labs. SMU's city campus is a state-of-the-art facility located in the heart of downtown Singapore, fostering strategic linkages with business, government, and the wider community.
From Singapore, the strategic hub of Asia, SMU applies its knowledge and global perspective in an Asian context to bridge concepts and provide critical insights. SMU research aims to create a significant impact through five Areas of Excellence. The Office of Research & Tech Transfer (ORTT) is the institutional office overseeing and supporting various research-related matters at the university level. ORTT works with the various SMU Schools, Institutes, Centres, and Labs (ICLs), and other University administration offices such as the Office of Finance (OFN) and the Office of Legal and General Affairs (OLGA) to provide support to researchers across the research project life cycle.
It was in 1997 that the Singapore government first mooted the idea of a third university for Singapore. Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Tony Tan believed that the new university should be different from the two established institutions - the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The government wanted SMU to be an experiment in diversity. The experiment began with the Chairman of the new institution's choice, Mr. Ho Kwon Ping, a renowned and successful business entrepreneur. He was joined by an SMU task force of academics, including Professor Tan Chin Tiong, who determined that SMU should be an American-style university offering a broad-based education, in contrast to Singapore's tradition of the more specialized British model.
Singapore is a critical financial and aviation hub and emphasizes innovation and prosperity with social and corporate responsibility. Located at the heart of Singapore's bustling central business district, SMU is positioned to tap into these facets and provide you with unparalleled opportunities for networking and personal growth. The city's low crime-rate, accessible and well-connected transportation system, and inexpensive local food make it one of the most sought-after places both regionally and globally to live, work and play.
Several social, sporting, recreational, and career-related events and activities are organized by the postgraduate office and students, career services office, and various SMU student clubs for Masters's students throughout the year. You will have many opportunities to pursue your interests and hone your networking skills while exchanging ideas with students from other programs. Organized in two of the weeks during the academic year, the exclusive Postgraduate (PG) Open Week will also bring forth a myriad of enriching and experiential activities for students to immerse in and expand their horizons while taking a break away from the rigors of studies.
As our graduating student, you will receive an immense amount of support to excel in your opportunities with potential employers. Our Postgraduate Career Services team has various supporting initiatives on this front. SMU GROW is a university-wide program that involves students, staff, and faculty in cultivating change through experiential and reflexive learning.
