Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) is dedicated to fulfilling Georgetown University's mission of promoting intellectual, ethical, and spiritual understanding through serious and sustained discourse among people of different faiths, cultures, and beliefs. Embodying this spirit of the University, Georgetown's Qatar campus undertakes education, research, and service to advance knowledge and provide students and the community with a holistic educational experience that produces global citizens committed to the service of humankind. We demonstrate the values of Georgetown University seek to build upon the world-class reputation of the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and work with our partner, Qatar Foundation, in its endeavors to achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030 and help develop Qatar's knowledge economy.

Our vision is to be recognized as the leading academic institution for international affairs in the Middle East by demonstrating unfailing excellence in teaching, research, and community outreach.

Georgetown brought its centuries-old tradition of teaching excellence in international affairs to Qatar to help build global leaders and analytical thinkers who will make a positive difference in their communities, their region, and our world.

To date, 440 graduates from 51 different countries have earned a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (BSFS) degree, majoring in Culture and Politics, International Economics, International History, or International Politics. And our student population continues to grow. This year marks the first cohort of students enrolled in the Georgetown University Executive Master in Emergency & Disaster Management with opening and closing residencies in Doha, Qatar.

True to Georgetown's spirit, we focus on educating the whole person through exposure to different faiths, cultures, and beliefs and critical engagement with a range of ideas and points of view. Qatar's campus is a vibrant, multi-national community of outstanding students, faculty, alumni, and staff dedicated to the best in scholarship, learning, and service.

GU-Q scholars continue to shine globally and in the region, with a range of original research and publications and involvement in major international conferences. Our in-house research institute, the Center for International and Regional Studies, provides a forum for globally and locally relevant research while encouraging an exchange of ideas and engagement with scholars, opinion-makers, practitioners, and activists.

Meanwhile, our students' commitment to academic excellence has resulted in numerous awards, participation in international research programs, and a student-run conference organized annually by the Middle Eastern Studies Student Association.

At GU-Q, we provide a platform for the community to engage scholars and hear from visiting speakers through public events that analyze the issues shaping our world. Our executive and professional education programs offer the wider public an opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge with a range of diverse courses and community classes.

Our Values:

  • Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam" For the Greater Glory of God is the Society of Jesus's motto. This motto identifies the purpose of all endeavors. It is not merely doing good, but rather doing what will better or more effectively reveal God's active presence in our work and our world. Discerning what is better is always an essential principle of our decision-making.
  • Academic Excellence - In 1547, the first Jesuits were invited to begin a college in Messina, Italy, to allow the young men to receive the same quality of education that the early Jesuits promoted in training their own. Georgetown University is a descendant of this original commitment to education. Academic excellence describes the great importance that we have placed on the mind's life as a means for uncovering truth and discovering meaning. Georgetown's emphasis on academic excellence is reflected in our faculty and students' careful selection, the quality of teaching, and the importance of research on campus. It has led to our recognition as one of the top 25 universities in the United States.
  • Educating the Whole Person - St. Ignatius believed that God could be discovered in every human endeavor, in every facet of learning and experience, and every field of study. He promoted the development of each person's spiritual, intellectual, artistic, social, and physical aspects. Georgetown's commitment to educating the whole person is evident in our strong core curriculum, our wide array of academic programs, and our commitment to living and learning in spiritual communities.
  • Faith and Justice - The Jesuits made a significant institutional commitment to "the service of faith and the promotion of justice," which obligates us to address the social realities of poverty, oppression, and injustice. While not all Georgetown community members would base their commitment to justice on religious principles, our institutional commitment to promote justice in the world grounds and inspires numerous University projects with the world's underserved communities.
  • Interreligious Understanding - The Georgetown University community comprises a wide variety of religious traditions; we support various faith-based student groups, a variety of affiliated ministries, and numerous interreligious events and services. Also, the University sponsors the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, the Program for Jewish Civilization, the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs, and the Catholic Studies Program.
  • The community in Diversity - The Georgetown community welcomes and sustains rich diversity among our students, faculty, and staff. Approximately 52 percent of our student body are women, 22 percent of our undergraduate students are from a minority ethnic background, and over 2,000 students, faculty, and researchers come from 130 foreign countries. At Qatar's campus, the students comprise about 50 different nationalities from a diverse variety of faiths and cultural backgrounds.
