Educational Institution of Higher Education «Pyatigorsk State University» (former Pyatigorsk State Linguistic University) is a major innovative, educational, research and humanities center of South Russia, widely known throughout the country and abroad under the brand name "University that Opens and Transforms the World." This is the university of creative ideas, creative professions, creative practices, and technologies. Pyatigorsk State University is among them. It is one of several universities in the country that implements qualified training in foreign languages teaching and this type's central university in South Russia. The university trains a new type of graduates – transforming leaders who can create and implement innovations.
The university has a rich history and old traditions dating back to 1939 when Pyatigorsk State Pedagogical Institute was founded. Later, in 1961 it was transformed into the Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages, and in 1995 it acquired the status of a Linguistic University. Since 2006 the university has headed for the changes from a conventional university to a creative, innovative university, the leading center of education, science, and innovations. In May 2016, a new era of university development as a multidisciplinary institution started.
Continually developing its innovative potential and competitiveness in chosen focus areas, more and more integrating into the world academic space, to implement a function of the creative and innovational university, "University which opens and transforms the world," a progressive scientific, educational, and peacekeeping center, the center of languages and cultures diversity, which provides production of new global-scale knowledge, creation and use of humanitarian and social innovations, the graduation of unique human resources with profound knowledge of foreign languages and high level of professional and social competence, enhancing the prestige of Russian higher school, and increasing its export resource.
Over 5500 undergraduates, postgraduates, and trainees from 56 Russian regions and 26 foreign countries study at the Institutes and Schools of the University, 3500 more are involved in its Lifelong Learning Structures. All the people and ethnic groups of the North Caucasus are represented in its friendly student community. PSU graduates live and work in more than 82 countries in the world. PSU is one of the leaders in the transition to a multilevel system of higher education. Unique professional programs are being implemented in intramural, extramural, and part-time education. Master's and postgraduate programs are successfully implemented as well. There are doctoral dissertation councils for philological and pedagogical sciences. Pyatigorsk State University offers accommodation at several dormitories throughout the city. Simultaneously, international mobility students are commonly accommodated in the on-campus safeguarded dorm within walking distance from the main PSU building. The lodging units with shower cabins and bathrooms consist of 2-3 two-bedrooms. The galley kitchens equipped with cookstoves, frig, micro-waves, kitchenware, and utensils provide self-cooking opportunities. A self-operated laundry facility is also available.
PSU played its role in implementing a program of Russian Language Education Promotion (under the Pushkin Institute's name) supervised by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and Pushkin State Institute of Russian Language. The university administration continued the work on scientific activity management forms improvement and organization of scientific researches. It was directed on further integrating scientific studies in social and humanitarian sciences, consolidation of scientists, who worked in different fields of social and humanitarian knowledge strengthening of the practical direction of scientific working outs, systematization, and activation of scientific activity of the chairs. Scientific Work management was improved. It joined the scientific and research unit, editorial, publishing unit, postgraduate, and doctorate studies unit. The university's scientific part implemented analytic, organizational, and controlling activity, including planning, development, scientific events holding, and implementation of scientific and research studies, organization of collected papers publications, and analysis of the scientific work of the chairs results. University and its subdivisions actively participate in different scientific competitions.
