Future social workers and deacons have been studying at the Protestant University for Social Work and Deaconry since 1971. The degrees are state-recognized (Bachelor, Master) and church-recognized (Deacon degree). The University is funded by the Protestant-Lutheran Church in Northern Germany, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, and student fees. The provider of the Protestant University is the Das Rauhe Haus Foundation. Currently, around 550 students are studying at the Protestant University. Twenty full-time professors and lecturers and about 50 visiting lecturers are responsible for teaching. This scale allows participatory, research-based teaching, and learning in small groups. The intensive theory-practice transfer is key to all degree programs.
The degree programs for Social Work and Deaconry (B.A) and Social Work (M.A.) can be completed as full-time degrees or vocationally integrated or extra-occupational degrees. The degree programs on offer are thus, on the one hand, aimed at school, bachelor and diploma graduates. On the other hand, the degree programs are also tailored for practitioners in the professional field of social work and social education work. Completion of all Bachelor’s degrees confers state recognition as a social worker or a social education worker. Furthermore, a double degree is possible in all Bachelor’s degree programs: by completing additional modules, there is the option of gaining an ecclesiastical degree as a deacon. In the part-time, extra-occupational Master’s degree program, two majors are offered: Community Orientation and Ethics and Management. The degree provides qualifications for operative, coordinating, planning, and leadership activities in various social work spheres.
