The University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice is the only institution in the Slovak Republic offering higher education in the veterinary field. It has been providing veterinary education in English for 25 years. Nowadays, the University offers two English study programs: a 6-year degree program for secondary-school graduates and a 4-year degree post-BSc. Program for bachelors in agricultural, veterinary, or biological sciences, leading to Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). The primary mission of the University of Veterinary Education in Košice is to provide higher undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary education based on innovative scientific research in the field of veterinary science and pharmacy. The study at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Košice is governed by the following:

  • Act No. 131/2002 of the Code on higher education and the change and supplement to some acts
  • Study guidelines
  • Study program
  • Scholarship guidelines
  • Disciplinary regulations.

The University of Veterinary Medicine in Košice is a one faculty university providing higher education in accredited study programs of all three higher education levels. Higher education of the 1st level is provided in the study programs Cynologist and Safety of food and feed. The University of Veterinary Medicine in Košice provides education of the third level in 16 accredited study programs for full-time and external postgraduate students, with the standard length of study 4 and 5 years (8 and 10 semesters). The study programs of the third level of higher education were accredited in respective study branches, and the postgraduate students who complete the study are awarded the academic degree “doctor” (“Philosophiae doctor,” abbr. PhD.).

At the university level, the effectiveness and quality of education and scientific research are evaluated regularly at the Scientific Board of UVM and Rector’s Collegium meetings and twice a year at meetings of the Academic Senate of UVM with appropriate discussion resulting in resolutions, suggestions, and recommendations. At the national level, the University is evaluated by the Accreditation Commission of the Slovak Republic, in agreement with the Act No. 131/2002 of the Code on higher education and the change and supplement to some acts.

Based on an evaluation by the Education Committee of the European Association Establishments for Veterinary Education, the University of Veterinary Medicine in Košice was put on the EAEVE List. It was stated that the study programs “General veterinary medicine” and “Food hygiene” comply with the requirements of EU Directive 2005/36/ES (previously Directives 78/1026/EEC and 78/1027/EEC). Based on results of the evaluation of approximation of education in the field of veterinary medicine between the Slovak Republic and EU, carried out by Commission EU-TAIEX in 2002, a document issued by the Commission stated that the University of Veterinary Medicine in Košice complies with the EU standards and Diplomas issued by the University of Veterinary Medicine in Košice are accepted in EU countries.
