The National University of Music Bucharest is a Romanian professional institution of higher education, research, and music creation, founded in 1864. The mission of the National University of Music Bucharest can be defined through its four functions: preservation, orientation, filtration, and training.

• Preservation represents the permanent goal in offering a core of values and acceptable practices, continuously updated.
• Orientation consists of encouraging a personal option and vision due to previous and profound knowledge of music.
• Filtration clarifies broad and distorted information and gives it a direction while encouraging critical and reflexive thinking.
• Training creates the premises of shaping the taste within the spirit of the musical tradition and the freedom of innovation.

Concerning the value and importance of music in building an actual, multi-cultural, and integrated European society, as the most representative example of efficiency in non-verbal communication. Concerning the necessity of the 1-to-1 tuition as the basis of a qualitative music higher education. Concerning the creative integration of all the music education levels, from childhood to adulthood, including the lifelong learning process. Concerning the collaborative benefits of music, exchanging ideas, dialogue, and critical reflection brings in educating, learning, and promoting own values.

The National University of Music Bucharest has two faculties focused on the higher music education process:

• Faculty of Musical Performance (all classical instruments and singing)
• Faculty of Composition, Musicology and Music Pedagogy (composition, musicology, music pedagogy, orchestral and choir conducting, jazz-pop music and sacred music)

The research and advanced research are organized within a Doctoral School, a Post-Doctoral Institute, and a Research, Innovation, and Information Unit.
