SLU is a young university with a long history. It was founded in 1977 out of the agricultural, forestry, veterinary university colleges, the Veterinary School at Skara, and the Forestry School at Skinnskatteberg. SLU develops knowledge about using natural, biological land, and water resources sustainably. Education, research, and environmental monitoring and assessment are pursued at some thirty locations all over the country. The central campuses are Alnarp, Umeå, and Uppsala.

SLU develops the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources. This is achieved by research, education, and environmental monitoring and assessment in collaboration with the surrounding community. SLU is a world-class university in the fields of life and environmental sciences. We dare to question established knowledge through critical thinking and an open, inquiring perspective. Our university produces world-class research. We ask the big questions about nature, animals, and life itself. Our knowledge forms the foundation of a sustainable, thriving, and better world.

SLU values express the organization's common fundamental values. These guide everyday life by describing the starting point for your activity, for contacts with the outside world, and how we behave towards each other and others. All SLU employees are included in these values. The fundamental values are:

  • Scientific approach
  • Creativity
  • Openness
  • Responsibility.

In addition to these four fundamental values, there are six fundamental principles:

  • Democracy
  • Legality
  • Objectivity, factuality, and equal treatment
  • Free formation of opinions
  • Respect
  • Efficiency and service.

SLU is an attractive and stimulating workplace for our current and future employees. SLU is an attractive university for students and offers courses and programs of high quality with societal relevance. SLU's researchers have adequate access to research infrastructure, which allows ground-breaking, excellent research. SLU's collaboration will benefit society and be appreciated by stakeholders while the quality of our education, research, and EMA will be raised. Employees and students will know of and feel a commitment to SLU's activities and take joint responsibility for developing activities.

Our activities affect the environment directly through our use of resources, travel, emissions, etc. However, we can also influence the environment indirectly through our unique expertise in the area. SLU contributes to ecologically, socially, and financially sustainable development. Environmental thinking and environmental aspects are integrated into all decision-making and are part of all activities within SLU's organizational units.

SLU contributes to Agenda 2030 with innovative research, research-focused teaching, environmental monitoring and assessment (EMA), and more. Around 50 Swedish public authorities have come together to help bring about the transition needed in society. SLU's mission statement is closely linked to these global goals, and SLU was the first university to sign the joint declaration of intent.

SLU's public sector role, which initially only concerned the land-based sector, is broader and more developed these days. The goal to clarify the consequences of various trade-offs between production and sustainable goals dovetails with Agenda 2030, which emphasizes the importance of integrated approaches and solutions to meet the 17 goals. Our public sector role also has a global aspect. Our areas of responsibility are connected to societal challenges such as food, water and energy supply, urbanization, climate change, the transition to a bio-based economy, etc.

Collaboration with low-income countries is present within all research areas, and 20 percent of SLU's peer-reviewed scientific publications have co-authors from universities in low-income countries or from international research institutes that work with global development. SLU is the only Swedish university with a global development strategy. SLU Global develops these operations, among other things, by thematically prioritizing broad collaboration within SLU and with external parties.

SLU's courses and programs at undergraduate and Master's levels comprise professional programs that cannot be found at any other Swedish higher education institution. Students can become agronomists, horticulturists, forest officers, veterinarians, veterinary nurses, and landscape architects. These courses and programs are essential for the national skill supply. SLU also co-runs two civil engineering programs and offers several Master's programs relating to its strong research domains. The number of international Master's students is high, and this contributes to global continuing professional development.
