Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine

Recommended Posts

Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), founded in 1898, was the first institution in the world dedicated to research and teaching in the field of tropical medicine. As a registered charity, we often work across the world in challenging circumstances to fulfill our Mission of reducing the burden of sickness and mortality in endemic disease countries. We do that by delivering effective interventions that improve human health and are relevant to the most impoverished communities.
Our work in combating diseases such as TB, HIV/AIDS, malaria, dengue, and lymphatic filariasis is supported by a research order book of well over £210 million. Our worldwide reputation and the caliber of our research outputs have secured funding to lead over ten international consortia and product development partnerships to reduce or eliminate the impact of diseases upon the world's poorest people.
Our state-of-the-art facilities continue to develop new drugs, vaccines, and pesticides, which put us at the forefront of infectious disease research. As a teaching institution, we attract more than 600 students from 68 countries, from Ph.D. research and Masters programs to a range of professional courses, and work in partnership with health ministries, universities and research institutions worldwide to train the next generation of doctors, scientists, researchers, and health professionals.
The provision of technical assistance is a significant component of LSTM's Mission of promoting the improved health of the poor and disadvantaged peoples. LSTM consultancy improves health systems in developing countries while helping to inform our teaching and research agendas. We also provide pre- and post-travel clinical services through our subsidiary Well Travelled Clinics Ltd(link is external), with centers in Liverpool and Chester.
Our Vision is to save lives in resource-poor countries through research, education, and capacity strengthening. Our Mission is to reduce the burden of sickness and mortality in endemic disease countries through the delivery of effective interventions that improve human health and are relevant to the most impoverished communities. Our Values are Making a difference to health and well-being, Excellence in innovation, leadership, and science, Achieving and delivering through partnership, An ethical ethos founded on respect, accountability, and honesty, and creating a great place to work and study.
Our multidisciplinary approach to global health research allows us to translate research innovation and scientific breakthroughs from laboratory research into effective interventions for those most in need.
Born out of the shipping industry, LSTM attracts talented researchers and students from around the world. With a research portfolio of over £320 million, LSTM has created and sustained a reputation for scientific Excellence and continues to offer unrivaled learning opportunities to postgraduate students. They study both in the UK and across the developing world.
As one of the few postgraduate centers of Excellence in the field of tropical medicine, we are enthusiastic about offering our unrivaled learning opportunities to students within the UK and across the developing world, to provide them with the opportunity to excel in their careers in public health, medicine, and academia.
A testament to our ongoing success LSTM continues to expand: we have matched our investment in new facilities, such as the Liverpool Life Sciences Accelerator Building, with an investment in new talent and increased our staff numbers from 160 in 2001 over 471 by the end of 2016.
