Our vision, “Nurturing the Whole Child,” is the driving force behind everything we do at Darling Downs Christian School. Real education means more than pursuing a course of academic study. It has to do with the whole person and with the whole existence possible to human beings.
Author Steven Covey talks about the four “magnificent parts of our nature” – body, mind, heart, and spirit – and their corresponding needs: to live, to learn, to love, and to leave a legacy. Our intelligence is associated with these four parts - our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual capacities.
When students respect and integrate all parts of their nature, they can better realize their potential. Developing the four bits of intelligence plays a vital role in assisting our students in discovering their “voice.”
At Darling Downs Christian School, we encourage each child to be the best ‘ME’ they can be. We aim to teach our students the skills they need to develop and become happy, confident young people. Young people can seek solutions to problems, form friendships, develop a sense of individual responsibility, and find enjoyment in life…to envision what they want to accomplish and find and use their voice.
A connection with God is used to develop our longing and capacity for meaning, vision, and value. The Biblical principles our students are taught to provide them with the strength of character and firm foundation they need to later excel in whatever capacity God calls them to serve human needs.

Darling Downs Christian School was established in March 1942, with 17 students – 16 boys and just one girl! Originally known as the Toowoomba Adventist Primary School, the school was given a blueprint for holistic education by its founders - the South Queensland Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.
In 1942, the world was in the midst of a terrible war. Two slit trenches dug at the back of the school were to be used in an air raid, and regular drills were carried out. The school’s first teacher and principal, Miss Niebuhr, was renowned for never using the cane. Detention was a much stronger deterrent in those days – when boys could lose the pocket money they made from selling newspapers to American soldiers after school.
