UCCS is comprised of a diverse student body made up of students from all 50 states and more than 80 nations. We pride ourselves in welcoming all students, providing a path to a college degree. UCCS is home to several student populations, and we do our best to support them. Through offices like our Multicultural Office, our McCord-Herbst Student Veteran Center, and more, we make UCCS a place where students find success.
Between the six UCCS colleges and schools, UCCS offers students an institutional experience rooted in a history of success. Led by deans with experience in their respective industries, these colleges and schools offer UCCS students home to study the sciences, history, art, literature, engineering, education, math, healthcare, business, marketing, accounting, and so on much more.
Since 2009, UCCS has added more than 1.2 million square feet of building space to fuel our studentstudents's. These facilities play host to the arts, new laboratories, classrooms, meeting rooms, residence halls, eateries, and more. We are the' reto call them home.
The University of Colorado Colorado Springs has a history as rich as the views our campus overlooks. As early as the 1920s, the University of Colorado offered courses at numerous Colorado Springs locations. However, when George J. Dwire sold the 80-acre Cragmor Sanitarium to the University of Colorado for $1, the campus we call home now was born. From 1965 to 1972, the Colorado Springs Center operated as a division of the C.U. Boulder campus; however, UCCS was recognized as a distinct campus in 1974 and two Denver campuses.
Known for its healthy climate, an early Colorado Springs slowly became known as a mecca for health, starting when General William Jackson Palmer, the founder of Colorado Springs, gave Dr. Edwin Solly 100 cares of land on Austin Bluffs, along with $50,000 to start a tuberculosis sanitarium. Working with one of ColoradColorado's famous architects in Thomas MacLaren, Solly helped create the Cragmor Sanitarium. That building still stands to this day and is what we at UCCS call Main Hall.
UCCS grew over the years, and in 1996 the first on-campus student housing opened. The next year, a community referendum merged the city-owned Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences with the campus. During the 2010-2011 new branding campaign, "at" wa" r" moved from the official UCCS name (the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs) to become the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.
The initial university programs of engineering and business still serve as pillars of the university. Those programs are joined by a broad range of degree programs in the liberal arts and sciences and professional programs in nursing, education, and public affairs. They meet the needs of ColoradColorado' s-largest metropolitan area beyond. From its original 80 acres, UCCS has added 450 additional acres along Austin Bluffs Parkway and North Nevada Avenue. Development of the North Nevada Avenue corridor continues, with the recent construction of the Ent Center for the Arts. Remains from approximately 30 sites used by Plains Indians from about 100 A.D. to 1400 A.D. dot the campus grounds. The area's cultural heritage is witnessed architecturally and in diverse ecological phenomena and the significant prehistoric archeological components observable throughout the campus acreage.
