More than 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled in our accredited and nationally recognized programs, enjoying traditional and nontraditional classroom experiences, engaging in research and service activities with their faculty mentors, becoming lifelong learners, preparing for rewarding careers and productive lives, and developing leadership skills for effective citizenship.
Located in the heart of Indiana, Pennsylvania, IUP's main campus has grown from 12 acres and one building in 1875 to 354 acres and 65 significant buildings. The IUP Student Cooperative Association owns and operates the Hadley complex adjacent to the main campus and owns and maintains a 280-acre outdoor recreational park a short distance away.
Not only does IUP offer an abundance of undergraduate and master's programs, but it is the only university in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education to offer Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Degrees are offered from the broader, more traditional (philosophy, anthropology) to the career-specific (safety sciences, respiratory therapy). Students benefit from the leadership, professional, service, and social opportunities offered by more than 250 exciting student organizations, including 32 fraternities and sororities.

What makes the IUP experience stand out is this: At mega-universities, students might catch a glimpse of the professor too busy researching to be in the classroom; he or she passes the class off to the graduate assistant. Not at IUP, where the professors who conduct critical research also teach the classes. Often, those same faculty members will share research opportunities with graduate and undergraduate students alike.
At IUP, students find a variety of academic programs and resources for the taking. Founded more than 140 years ago, Indiana University of Pennsylvania has grown from a school with 225 students. One building to a world-renowned university spread over 374 acres, with almost 15,000 students studying more than 130 programs.
It was known as Indiana Normal School when it was founded in 1875. The one building everything was initially housed in, John Sutton Hall, still stands today as the IUP campus's heart, and it is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education was created in 1983. IUP has consistently ranked as one of its largest schools, and it was the first of its universities to offer doctoral degrees. It is still the only school in the State System to offer graduate instruction at the doctoral level (Ph.D.).
