Grambling State University combines the academic strengths of a major university with the benefits of a small college. We offer more than forty (40) undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs through four colleges, including two professional schools and a graduate school. Additional academic support units include the University College, Earl Lester Cole Honors College, Continuing Education, Service-Learning, and Army ROTC. National, regional, and local employers recruit graduates from Grambling's excellent nursing programs, computer science, teacher education, the arts, and other academic areas.
In addition to being one of the country's top producers of African American graduates and the top producer of Computer Information Science grads in Louisiana, Grambling is the home of the internationally-renowned Tiger Marching Band and the legendary college football coach Eddie Robinson, Sr., whose tenure is memorialized in a campus museum, funded and operated by the state of Louisiana. GSU is a member of the University of Louisiana System and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The Distance Learning Program (DLP) is a university-wide unit that utilizes various state-of-the-art telecommunication technologies and instructional strategies to enhance and augment the university's curriculum offerings. The DLP serves as a technological support arm of the academic programs. Information is delivered through video, satellite uplinking, compressed video, and computer/Internet technologies.
Grambling State University's Distance Learning Program was the first in the state to offer a bachelor's degree. GSU operates two Mobile Automated Learning Labs (MALLs) that provide community and worksite access to individualized and computerized instruction and learning.
The mission of Grambling State University's Office of Academic Support & Special Programs is to promote academic excellence by providing students with support programs and services that will strengthen academic performance and improve retention. The Office of Academic Support and Special Programs offers academic support programs and services to all Grambling State University students: those who are experiencing academic difficulties and those who are succeeding academically but wish to enrich their educational experiences further and realize their fullest potential Grambling State University.

The Foster-Johnson Health Center is an ambulatory medical facility. It is the student's advocate for health promotion, disease prevention, and early intervention of illness. The health center provides primary health care services to the Grambling State University student body by offering immediate care, medical advice, health counseling, assessment and treatment of maladies, referrals, and wellness education. A validated Grambling State University identification card must be presented when requesting services. The purpose of the Foster-Johnson Health Center is to provide compassionate, accessible, and quality health care services to the Grambling State University student body with respect for confidentiality.
The A. C. Lewis Memorial Library serves as the knowledge center and information repository hub for Grambling State University students and faculty. The library's mission is to lead the collaborative development of an academic information infrastructure that meets the changing needs of information creation, preservation, dissemination, and the application of knowledge to help support the greater Grambling community's research needs.
The library fosters information empowerment for the success of students, faculty, and staff by providing access to collections, ranging from the traditional print to state-of-the-art electronic resources, with technically advanced database systems to help provide a platform for scholarship endeavors that inspire faculty of reasoning, intellectual curiosity, and promote critical thinking.
Grambling State University opened on November 1, 1901, like the Colored Industrial and Agricultural School. It was founded by the North Louisiana Colored Agriculture Relief Association, organized in 1896 by a group of African-American farmers who wanted to organize and operate a school for African Americans in their region of the state. In response to the Association's request for assistance, Tuskegee Institute's Booker T. Washington sent Charles P. Adams to help the group organize an industrial school. Adams became its founding president.
