Adelphi University is a highly awarded, nationally ranked, powerfully connected doctoral research university offering exceptional liberal arts and sciences programs and professional training with particular strength in its Core Four—Arts and Humanities, STEM and Social Sciences, the Business and Education Professions, and Health and Wellness. Adelphi is dedicated to transforming students' lives through small classes, hands-on learning, and innovative ways to support student success.
Founded in Brooklyn in 1896, Adelphi is Long Island's oldest private, coeducational University. Today Adelphi serves almost 8,000 students at its beautiful main campus in Garden City, New York—just 23 miles from New York City's cultural and internship opportunities—and at dynamic learning hubs in Manhattan, the Hudson Valley, and Suffolk County, and online. More than 100,000 Adelphi graduates have gained the skills to thrive professionally as active, caring citizens, making their mark on the University, their communities, and the world.
Our University transforms all students' lives by creating a unique environment of intellectual rigor, research, creativity, and deep community engagement across our Core Four areas of focus: Arts and Humanities, STEM and Social Sciences, the Business and Education Professions, and Health and Wellness. We will become a nationally respected leader—a standard-bearer—for redefining the practical and personal value of education for students, helping them define their success in the classroom, on campus, in careers and communities, and beyond.
An average 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio, with exceptionally high academic quality, gives every student hands-on learning and close interaction with excellent faculty. Our belief in one-to-one learning is revolutionizing the university experience for thousands of students.
Adelphi University has been responsive to student aspirations, societal needs, and the changing career landscape from its inception. We have adapted our degree programs and continuing education opportunities to meet better the demands of today's technology-driven, global, and interconnected economy and society. Our graduates' ability to successfully navigate these connections, emerge as leaders, and make contributions in their communities is the hallmark of an Adelphi education.
You may already know that Adelphi professors know their students by name—that is part of what makes Adelphi unique. You might not know that they also sometimes pack a suitcase, grab their passports, and travel right alongside them—all over the world. The study abroad program at Adelphi can make a student's journey here so special. During January Intersession, spring break, and over the summer, you will find faculty and students heading off to truly enhance the studies they tackle in the classroom in New York. Students earn credits while they trade in classrooms for caves in northern India, huts in Costa Rica, theater seats in London, or chemistry labs in Poland.
While students and their professors travel to all points of the globe this summer, we are already setting up programs for the upcoming January Intersession. With the recent news of a pilot whale dying after ingesting 17 pounds of plastic waste, perhaps our Marine Ecology students will discover ways to change the course of such tragedies while studying in Belize. I am also thrilled to announce that Adelphi students will be visiting the fascinating country of Botswana to study culture, health, and healing. Furthermore, through our Robert B. Willumstad School of Business, young entrepreneurs will travel to India to observe management styles and visit start-ups and tech companies in one of the world's emerging global markets.
Adelphi students, faculty, and staff gather together to discuss and address diversity-related issues on campus. These community-focused initiatives are dedicated to opening dialogues and making positive change. Diversity is an affirmation of the richness of human differences, ideas, and beliefs. At Adelphi University, we want our students to become citizens who understand and appreciate diversity on an authentic internalized level.
A commitment to secure community connections is in Adelphi's DNA. It earned the University the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching's prestigious Community Engagement Classification in 2010, an honor given to only ten institutions of higher education in New York State. This classification reflects the University's purposeful efforts to make community engagement a defining feature of Adelphi. Its initiatives in this area epitomize Adelphi's simultaneous commitment to its core founding values and the rapidly changing local, national, and global communities it serves.
Investments in more than a dozen well-regarded public policy and community services centers—ranging from the 30-year-old Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program to the newer Institute for Parenting and the Long Island Center for Nonprofit Leadership—have earned Adelphi a reputation as an "engaged university." This engagement extends beyond the region in meaningful ways. Faculty members are engaged in developing and evaluating new programs and service models and, along with students, participate in research to inform social policy, program, and service delivery.
As the engaged University, Adelphi encourages student, faculty, and staff participation in its extensive community service programs and welcomes the community's attendance at its cultural, educational, and athletic activities.
