The Izmir University of Economics, which is the first foundation university in Izmir and Aegean region, was established in 2001 by "Izmir Chamber of Commerce Education and Health Foundation" following the provisions of the Turkish Republic Constitution, Law No: 2547, Higher Education Law and Regulations about Foundation Higher Education Institutions.
The University currently has 8 Faculties, 2 Schools, 3 Vocational Schools, 4 Graduate Schools, and 10 Research and Application Centers.
These academic units offer 32 different associate degree programs, 35 different undergraduate programs, 38 different graduate programs, and nine different Ph.D. programs.
Department of "Fashion and Textile Design" accepts students through pre-registration/aptitude test, and associate degree programs accept students through student selection and placement center (placed by OSYM).
The Izmir University of Economics has ERASMUS+ agreements with 168 universities in 26 countries and academic cooperation protocol with 41 universities abroad as of March 2019.
The Mission of the İzmir University of Economics is to educate and equip qualified students with leadership attributes, entrepreneurial capabilities, critical thinking skills, and the ability to contribute valuable research in various sciences.

The Izmir University of Economics has prepared three Strategic Plans since its establishment. The first plan includes the period of 2006-2009, the second plan 2010-2013, and the last one includes 2013-2023. The Strategic Planning Committee has prepared each plan explicitly established for that period. Strategic Plan Monitoring Committee carries out monitoring of the plans. The latest Strategic Plan Monitoring Committee has been constituted in January 2017 and has been working since then.
