The last half a century of development at NTUA developed in parallel with Modern Taiwan Art History. Our institution now has the most extended history of any art institution in Taiwan and the most specialized fields.
In the early history of the school, many well-known and accomplished artists taught at NTUA, creating an entirely new environment in which the arts could develop. The masters who made up the first faculty team then produced countless new talent. Many famous directors have graduated from NTUA, including 78th Oscar Award Best Director Winner Ang Lee. And there have been countless musicians, artists, and designers, too.
NTUA was established as the National School of Arts on October 31, 1955. In 1960, the name was changed to the National Taiwan Academy of Arts, and then in August 1994, the National Taiwan College of Arts was established. The institution took on its present name on August 1, 2001. Education at our institution emphasizes humanistic thinking, creative production, theoretical analysis, and hands-on practice. In terms of scope, education includes the local and the international, the avant-garde and the traditional, the creative and the commercial, and the theoretical and the practical.
The university employs about 186 staff members, 165 full-time faculty members, and 771 part-time teachers. The university is home to about 5000 students.
The College of Fine Arts is one of the five colleges at the National Taiwan University of Arts. The College contains the Department of Fine Arts, Department of Painting and Calligraphy Arts, Department of Sculpture, and Department of Architecture Art Preservation. Each department has both undergraduate and graduate programs. Also, the Department of Fine Arts and the Department of Chinese Calligraphy and Painting have undergraduate programs (evenings). Department of Painting and Calligraphy Arts provides an M.A. Program.
The College of Fine Arts embraces both tradition and innovation. Students study art theory from both east and the west and value local characteristics while developing global views. The College strives to use technology, incorporate international information, and encourage students to create an original style. The College actively recruits outstanding teachers with specialized and rich work experience to join our faculty. The College of Fine Arts is a strong supporter of the Creative and Cultural Industries.
The College of Design of NTUA was officially founded as our school system was reformed on August 1, 2001. From then on, The College of Design has become one of the five official colleges of NTUA.
At present, our College includes three departments for both undergraduate and graduate programs: the Department of Visual Communication Design, the Department of Crafts and Design, and the Department of Multimedia and Animation Arts, and a Graduate School of Creative Industrial Design, which offers doctoral degree program.
Our College is the only one among universities of arts in Taiwan, combining the practice-model and the research-model features with a complete educational system for arts and design. The academic excellence of our College has attracted some of the best teachers and students around the world to learn and research together. Additionally, we strive to connect and reinforce the exchanges between academic, research, industrial fields, and policies, accumulating the accomplishment of teaching and research of various disciplines, such as fine arts, design, science, management, and information technology, etc. Thus, our College has gained a solid foundation for interdisciplinary and integrative studies.
The College of Communications was formally established when our institution was upgraded to university status on August 1, 2001. The College includes the Department of Graphic Communication Arts, the Department of Radio and Television, the Motion Picture Department, and the Digital Media Center.
Under the university charter, five colleges were established when this institution officially became a university on August 1, 2001. The College of Performing Arts consists of the Department of Drama (including the Master of Performing Arts, formerly known as the Institute of Performing Arts), Department of Music, Department of Chinese Music, Department of Dance, and Ph.D. Program of Performing Arts. This makes our College the complete College of performing arts in Taiwan. Our College is committed to staying at the forefront of performance art research in the 21st Century and to making the College into a performance art center in Taiwan.
Our College consists of five teaching units: the General Education Center (GEC), the Teacher Education Center (TEC), The Graduate School of Art Management and Culture Policy (AMCP), the Graduate School of Arts & Humanities Instruction (AHI), and the M.A. Program of Chinese Arts for International Students. Our College cultivates students to work or teach in art-related fields. With global views and humanistic values, we are in the process of developing an “integrated humanity and arts education.” Such a focus will promote international communication and combine professional art education and multiculturalism.
