    KNU retains top-notch educational and research capabilities to nurture world-class talents who will actively function at the heart of new growth engines. The University has ranked 5th in the QS Asian University Evaluation for the number of papers published and has been selected for seven University Specialization Projects receiving funds of 6 billion won from the Ministry of Education; KNU was selected as the execution organization for new medicine development for the Daegu Gyeongbuk Medical Complex, Future Convergence Campus in Daegu Technopolis, and was awarded IEQAS(International Education Quality Assurance System) accreditation by the Korean government.
    Marking the 71st anniversary since it was established as a flagship comprehensive national university representing Daegu and the Gyeongbuk region, the birthplace of Korean culture and tradition, Kyungpook National University(KNU) has been at the forefront in leading national development and nurturing talented youths serving our society.     On July 18, Leiden University of the Netherlands released its 2017 annual global university ranking report. The results for KNU are based on data from 2012 to 2016 as provided by the academic information service company Thomson Reuters. According to this year’s report, which includes co-authored papers from Universities that have published over 5,000 volumes, KNU has increased its number of papers to 7,171 volumes, an increase of 436 volumes from the previous report. Among the Universities that have published over 1,000 volumes in the medico-biological and health science fields, KNU ranked highly with 1,447 volumes, 105 volumes more than the previous report. Overall, in terms of impact (quantified by the number of academic citations given to published papers), KNU ranks 386th globally, 67th in Asia, and 8th in Korea. KNU ranks 1st in Korea in the medico-biological and health science fields. Such results, it can be said, confirm KNU’s competitiveness in world-class research.
    CK-1 is a representative federal funding project, with funding for five years, from 2014 to 2018, in particular academic areas in universities. 2016 marked the third year of the project, and a re-selection process was done to provide opportunities for new projects and maintain best practices within existing projects. 89 projects out of 492 among 58 universities(62 new and 27 existing) were selected at the re-selection process, marking a 5.5:1 competition rate. KNU has consistently received top evaluations since 2014, including the interim evaluation in May 2016 and the re-selection process last July. Among the re-selected projects is the ‘Smart Electronic Specialized Project,’ ‘Future Industrial Material Project,’ ‘Global Food Resources Agricultural Development Talent Nurturing Project,’ ‘Horticultural Food Convergence “Glocal ”Talent Nurturing Project, “Glocal ” Culture Contents Creative Talents Project,’ and ‘Basic Science Talent Nurturing Project.’ KNU is planning to consistently develop and support specialized academic areas for more balanced development.
    KNU has been selected for the Program for Industrial needs-Matched Education (PRIME) project by the Korean Ministry of Education after being selected for the CORE project last March. KNU is the only local flagship university selected for the program. KNU has a plan to move some100 students out of 225 in the humanities and social division, the undeclared major category, to the newly established Global SoftwareConvergence department. As rapid growth in the ICT industry is expected in the next five years, KNU will do its best to nurture talent in the IT area.
    These models center on six primary competencies: global competencies, convergence, creativity, supremacy, leadership, and commitment. 100% of faculty and staff members in KNU colleges related to liberal arts participate in the program. All participating students will be required to take eight credits in introductory liberal arts courses.
