Unisa is the largest open distance learning institution in Africa and the most extended-standing dedicated distance education university globally. We enroll nearly one-third of all South African students.

Founded in 1873 as the University of the Cape of Good Hope, the institution became the first public university to teach exclusively using distance education in 1946. Throughout the years, Unisa was perhaps the only university in South Africa to have provided all people with access to education, irrespective of race, color, or creed. This vibrant past is mirrored in our rich history, particularly our massive and impressive alumni database. Some of them are to be found in the most senior levels of society across the world.

Given our rootedness in South Africa and the African continent, Unisa today can genuinely claim to be the African university in the service of humanity. We have embraced the fact that we need to adapt quickly to the fast-paced higher education environment of the 21st century, which is reflected in our management style and leadership practice. One of our main aims is to harness the new and emerging potential in information and communication technology to catapult the university into a truly digital future.

We offer an unparalleled range of study choices, ranging from short courses and certificate programs to three-and four-year degrees and diplomas to over 400 000 current students. As one of the leading research institutions on the continent, our research efforts have won us numerous awards, recognitions, and honors.

Whether you are beginning a new journey with us or staying involved with your alma mater, we commend you on choosing a world-class institution that has been building Africa's future for 141 years.

We are a reputable, comprehensive, flexible, and accessible open distance learning institution that is motivating a future generation. We offer internationally accredited qualifications and have world-class resources. Our vision "towards the African University shaping futures in the service of humanity" drives us to find answers to Africa's educational and developmental problems.

The three core business areas of Unisa are teaching research and community engagement. Our world-class research is spearheaded by the Research and Innovation portfolio and community engagement by our Community Engagement and Outreach Policy. We also place great importance on celebrating and promoting our African arts and culture through various endeavors.

Management at Unisa is ultimately responsible for creating an environment and culture conducive to attaining the university's vision to be the African university in humanity's service. Part of this responsibility lies in determining the mission, values, goals, objectives, strategies, and policies to safeguard and promote this vision.

Offering study opportunities to more than 400 000 students from across South Africa, Africa, and other parts of the world, Unisa offers a diverse choice of study fields at levels from certificate to degree.

At Unisa, our vision, mission, and values unite our diverse culture while guiding us in our decision making and strategic planning. "The African University shaping futures in the service of humanity" Our vision defines everything that we do. It describes our wish to serve every country on the African continent while transcending language and cultural barriers. We are 100% committed to the communities and individuals we serve.

Unisa is a comprehensive, open distance learning institution that produces excellent scholarship and research, provides quality tuition, and fosters active community engagement. We are guided by the principles of lifelong learning, student centredness, innovation, and creativity. Our efforts contribute to the knowledge and information society, advance development, nurture a critical citizenry, and ensure global sustainability.

Ethical and collective responsibility: Ethics reflects the intrinsic and extrinsic values, principles, norms, and standards to which Unisa is committed and is undergirded by respect, integrity, accountability, and excellence. Our ethics guide all institutional conduct, actions, decisions, and stakeholder relations, supporting equity and fairness. Against this backdrop, our decision-making will be participatory in the university's practical and efficient functioning interests. All employees are equally responsible for decisions taken, and implementation is underpinned by commitment and loyalty to and solidarity with Unisa.

Integrity: Integrity refers to conduct guided by honesty, equity, respect, transparency, responsibility, and accountability in all that we do. Integrity must be evident at an individual level. It should be infused in the institution's character through the individuals who constitute and engage with the university. It applies to all our stakeholders and reflects how we relate to them and how we expect them to engage with the university.

Innovation and excellence: At Unisa, innovation and excellence characterize the actions, attitudes, and culture required to create new ideas, processes, systems, structures, or artifacts that, when implemented, lead to a sustainable and high-performing institution. They are the underlying principles that we, as change agents, use to make a difference in the way we work with available resources to achieve our specific goals despite contextual and policy constraints. Innovation requires everyone to adopt a problem-solving approach that fosters intellectual ingenuity and novel solutions rather than merely problem identification.

Responsive student-centredness: Responsive student-centredness reflects our commitment to recognizing, cultivating, and promoting the interests and views of students, especially their lived experiences and prior learning, in order to achieve academic access and success in an Open Distance e-Learning context.

Dignity in diversity: At Unisa, we will strive to promote humanness, anti-racism, and self-worth in the context of cultural and intellectual differences for the attainment of equality and non-discrimination on the grounds including race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, ethnic or social origin, color, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, language, and birth. These values speak to Unisa's soul and identity in all of its endeavors, including but not limited to its scholarship and practices, its service to students and other stakeholders, its operations, sustainability imperatives, and ambition to be a leader in acceptable governance practices.
