The Mission of Belgorod State National Research University is to solve research problems of the international and national scale and, harmoniously integrating the educational, research, social and cultural functions of the University, to train highly qualified professionals capable of ensuring the competitiveness of Russia and Belgorod region on the global socioeconomic arena, preserving and developing the cultural and moral legacy of the country and the region. BSU became the primary Institution of the University of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in the direction of "Nanotechnology." Belgorod State University was the only academic institution of the Belgorod region and the Central Federal District of Russia (except Moscow universities) to be granted the "National Research University" status. Belgorod State National Research University was ranked 30th among 103 Russian state universities, and about 500 branches are participating in the rating. The University raised to 13th position (from 51st in 2011) in the ranking of 60 academic institutions that participated in the Federal Bursarial Program of Vladimir Potanin Charity Fund. The University welcomed 9 Associates and Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences as new teaching staff members. The number of new scientific laboratories was reached 10. Some of them were founded under the Russian Academy of Sciences Associates and Members' participation or leadership. All the actual results for the next scheduled step specified by the NRU "BelSU" Program were achieved. BelSU proved its status as a National Research University and provided evidence of being an undoubtedly useful educational and scientific institution. BelSU entered the rating of the 150 best universities of Europe and Central Asia. The rating is presented by QS Quacquarelli Symonds (141-150 place).

Belgorod State National Research University is the Belgorod region's leading institution of higher education. Today BelSU is a state-of-art university complex, which can adjust to changes in modern social, economic and political life. It plays an active integrational role in the regional, federal, and global scientific and educational space. Over 5000 specialists for social, production, and economic spheres of the region and whole country, graduate from Belgorod State University annually. The educational services market scale is represented by the cohort of BelSU students, originating from all the 85 regions of Russia and 84 countries. At Belgorod State University, research of numerous scientific areas is conducted through research groups' efforts, headed by scientists who are Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences and laureates of state scientific prizes. Research scientific activities are performed in academic and research units, including collective use centers, scientific research laboratories, scientific research centers, and teaching and research centers.

In BelSU, much attention is given to forming the University's efficient business ecosystem, regarded as a system of conditions to successfully develop smaller knowledge-intensive innovative businesses within the Belgorod State National Research University's innovative belt. Among such conditions are carrying out scientific research about actual demands of the real economy and certain economic entities, building up business teams responsible for commercialization of research and development results, and BelSU scientific activities and innovative chain: from the generation of commercially attractive scientific concept to its embodiment into a specific innovative product.
