The Medical University of Lodz was inaugurated on October 1, 2002, as a merger of two Medical Schools: the Medical Academy of Lodz and the Military Medical Academy of Lodz by the Act of the Polish Parliament of July 27, 2002. The Medical Academy of Lodz was founded on October 24, 1949, by separating from the University of Lodz's three faculties: Medical, Dental, and Pharmaceutical.

The Military Medical Academy of Lodz was established by the Order of the Ministry of National Defense of May 1958, however, its traditions date back to 1922. In the course of their existence, the Medical Academy and the Military Medical Academy have graduated over 34,000 physicians, dentists, pharmacists, and other medical specialists. The Medical University continues the tradition of both medical schools, being the successor of their rich heritage.

The Medical University of Lodz is the largest state-owned medical university in Poland whose mission is:

    • Educating students in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and medicine-allied disciplines
    • Educating research staff and conducting research work
    • Conducting postgraduate training of highly qualified health care system staff
    • Participating in health care programs set by the social health care system.

MUL has recently dedicated a new clinical and education center with a hospital, hotel, and conference center as well as classrooms and labs. The conference auditorium can seat up to 1,000 guests.

The concept of up-to-date and comprehensive professional training of medical manpower is being improved all the time. The process of education has been focused on preparing specialists for work in various communities and national health care systems. Our educational offer, gradually and consequently modified and widened, has been adjusted to requirements laid down in the resolutions validated by our Government within the European Union co-operation. Following Poland's entry into the European Union on May 1, 2004, the University offers automatic recognition of the degree for most of the faculties within all 25 countries of the European Union.

The University employs almost 1,600 research and didactic staff, including over 300 independent researchers, i.e. 170 full professors, 190 assistant and associate professors as well as nearly 900 Ph.D. academics. Our educational programs arouse great interest among both Polish and international students.

The quality of our teaching remains one of the highest among Polish universities, which is reflected by official inspections and rankings. The students of the Faculty of Medicine are the winners of the most prestigious scientific awards like “Medical Laurels” of the Polish Academy of Science or Best Student Awards like “Primus Inter Pares.

The Medical University of Lodz is one of the leading medical research centers in Poland. In one academic year over a hundred research grants are awarded, as well as numerous research contracts. At present over 300 individual research projects are being conducted, of which over 100 are new ones and more than 200 are continued.

Medical University has over 1600 hospital beds in five Teaching Hospitals that provide medical services for patients, being the essential base for research work and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Moreover, 34 hospital wards and departments with almost 1200 beds localized in non-University municipal hospitals are used by the Medical University. The University Teaching Hospitals and University-affiliated departments constitute a basic source for highly specialized diagnostic and treatment services provided by more than 1250 medical professionals including 750 specialists with professors and associate professors who take care of the health needs of the Lodz region community and promote health-related programs.
