The establishment of the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Sakrand (2nd in Pakistan) chartered by Govt of Sindh on 13th Sep 2012 (SINDH ACT NO. XV OF 2012) is a milestone that will go a long way in the development of livestock sector and socioeconomic status of farming community The University owes to its existence to the foresight and vision of His excellence Mr. Asif Ali Zardari, ex-president Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The livestock sector contributed over 55% of the total contribution of Agriculture to the GDP during the year 2012-2013. The strength of this sector lies in its consistently higher growth rate (4%) than overall of Agriculture sector.
The university has been established with the specific objective of the development of the livestock and poultry sector through proper and systematic education, training, research, and extension in modern systems of veterinary and animal sciences and its allied sciences. Such as fisheries, wildlife, range management, silkworm, beekeeping, Dairy and Food Technology, Animal Business Management, Basic Sciences, Humanities, and Information Technology. The need for the inculcation of self-reliance in students for securing coveted placements and addressing the expectations of rural and urban sectors of societies can be met with increased Teaching-Research-Extension linkages.
The challenges of keeping abreast with modern trends of Research have been sharpened as well as facilitated on account of the advents of Info-communication Technology (ICT) through which the world has been transformed into a global village. Traditions are good to sustain but new paths are to be searched for growth. This requires innovativeness in ideas and freedom of action. We, as enlightened clans, are expected to convert challenges into opportunities.
The problems of livestock production are related to health, genetics, nutrition, and marketing. The young professionals should be capable of improving production and yield through better management of germplasm, nutrition, and disease prevention. The competence of graduates in technologies, value addition in milk, meat, fish, wool, skin, hides, and casings will facilitate equitable development of rural and urban livestock and will help self-reliance, reduced imports, and improvement in exports. While the role of vets as trained biologists is recognized by their contributions in multiple scientific disciplines relevant to WTO, food safety and above all human health, diversification, conservation, and preservation of wildlife, biotechnology, gene sequencing, developing and improving breeds are long-awaited expectations from the veterinarians.
To improve and modernize animal entrepreneurship from traditional to the modern farming system through the development of appropriate technologies and research on applied problems. Human resource development to evolve strategies for sustainable development and improvement of animal sector leading to poverty alleviation through food and social security in the country. Human resource development to provide professional manpower for developing livestock and allied sectors. To establish close International cooperation and coordination among veterinary education, research, and use of latest biotechnologies in the livestock sector. Boost upbringing and cementing rural socioeconomic fabric particularly in woman folk among rural population engaged in livestock production, resulting in poverty alleviation.
