Baqai Medical University

The Baqais( Dr.Fareed Uddin Baqai and Dr.Zahida Baqai), both medical practitioners and surgeons by profession, after completing their medical education in Pakistan and Great Britain, started practicing the art of healing in an underdeveloped country and a fast-growing city of Karachi. The enormity and complexity of health care problems and the paucity of proper infrastructures for health care delivery systems motivated them to develop a comprehensive concept of community development based on self-reliance and without depending upon the public sector financing.
The gushing flow of creativity and new ideas then began to take other concrete shapes in an organization. From this stage onwards, it was only a matter of time and intensity of commitments. In the early '80s, the basic construction of the building of Baqai Medical College was started. After the completion of the infrastructure, designing of the curriculum to conform to the community-oriented medical education and recruitment of highly qualified and most experienced personnel available in the profession, affiliation with the University of Karachi was obtained, and the Baqai Medical College was started in 1988 with the admission of 50 students for the first batch. In 1992, Baqai Foundation established the Baqai Dental College. It goes to Baqai's credit that this is the first-ever Dental College to be set-up in Karachi.
Presently the university stands on a campus of 72 acres with a buildup area of 7,27,374 sq. ft in seven blocks of buildings. Housing 13 institutions, shouldering the teaching responsibility of 1800 students, awarding 19 degrees and diplomas in various specialties. It, directly and indirectly, employs more than 1000 individuals in different capacities. It is the only university in Pakistan established on Community Based and Community Oriented Medical Education. The futuristic mission of our Community Oriented University is being adhered to, and continuous improvement and widening of paradigms of education being imparted to students is its integral component so that they can compete with all international standards.
Our vision is a University Town at Gadap, having been developed around Baqai Medical University like Oxford & Cambridge Universities in England, on the pattern of Utah State University and the Aligarh Muslim University of Indo-Pak subcontinent. This town of Education and Learning will have many Colleges of ARTS and SCIENCES besides Universities. This mega project is being developed based on Self Reliance. The government supports these projects, and efforts have been made to bolster academic and research projects in the best possible manner.
The women's status was raised economically, educationally, health-wise, and Socially through Social Obstetrics. All this being achieved by the Community through community participation at all levels, with complete autonomy at the local level having no central bureaucratic control.
Modern Medicine, despite globalization, is evolving in a society-linked manner. In North America, this is expensive, technological, and litigation conscious, whereas it is evolving into another social service and a job rather than a profession in Europe.
The 21st century has added further pressures and needs to medical education. High-quality information is doubling every three years. The genomic revolution has shown that all diseases have an individual genetic predisposition expressed by interaction with the environment, largely nutrition. This has been a significant advantage in allowing prevention. Finally, systems biology development has reminded us that the whole patient needs to be treated. The proliferation of super specialties to deal with increased knowledge requires a firm base to understand and treat the whole patient.
Societal changes also dictate its methods into medical teaching and practice. Baqai has responded by founding an institute of Information Technology which interacts with the university at all levels. Similarly, the importance of economic and financial matters in modern life has led to the development of an institute of Business Administration.
