Our education enables students to function at a high level as creative artists, applied artists, or teachers. Graduates can contribute to constant renewal in art and quality in society. ArtEZ's education also draws strength in a broad sense from the disciplines of visual art, design, architecture, music, dance, and theatre.
ArtEZ stands for an internationally recognized standard of quality in art education. Graduates know their position and the power they hold. They have developed their artistry and craftsmanship and know-how to imbue their art with societal meaning through working with others. They are prepared for professional practice at the highest level and in an international context.
At ArtEZ, art is given space to be of significance to others: for individuals, groups, and organizations. ArtEZ feels it is partly responsible for an attractive and stimulating cultural environment and the cultural infrastructure in the eastern Netherlands, particularly its locations in Arnhem, Enschede, and Zwolle.
A certain tension is required in art education. Issues of society or professional practice are sometimes focused on short-lived trends or immediate practical applicability. However, professional practice ultimately benefits from encouraging and guaranteeing the autonomy and individuality of students. These form the basis for the development of artistry and are a prerequisite for truly innovative art. It is in this field of tension that ArtEZ provides education.
ArtEZ provides a coherent range of preparatory courses, Bachelor's and Master's programs in visual art, architecture, fashion, design, music, theatre, creative writing, dance, and art education for more than 3000 students Arnhem, Enschede, and Zwolle. ArtEZ is a specialized knowledge institute where lecturers link theory with practice. ArtEZ works together with many nationally and abroad partners, such as other educational institutes, companies, governments, and non-profit organizations.
Education at ArtEZ focuses on the artistic, intellectual, and personal growth of students. They are trained in a professional role that closely matches their talent, personality, and ambitions. This involves supervision by lecturers who have earned their spurs in professional practice. Through this individual approach, students are optimally prepared for their careers as art and culture professionals.
ArtEZ is one of the Netherlands' primary art schools and is located in Arnhem, Enschede, and Zwolle. The university of applied sciences has a total of 900 employees, including around 600 lecturers. In addition to their positions at ArtEZ, lecturers often work in professional practice as well. The Executive Board and the support services are concentrated in Arnhem.
ArtEZ aims to prepare students as broadly as possible for professional practice as artists. Entrepreneurial skills are a necessary part of this. From fashion designers to musicians, from choreographers to architects, more and more artists establish themselves as independent entrepreneurs or opting for mixed professional practice. Employed graduates are also expected to demonstrate entrepreneurial behavior.
ArtEZ pays attention to the economic, financial, and legal aspects of professional practice. For example, at the Academy of Music, the required course Musiconomy covers taxes, forms of collaboration, and contracts. This is elaborated upon in the course Music Management and Musicology. In Art Economy, Art & Design students learn things such as how to set up their own business, the fiscal implications of this, and how to deal with copyright. Entrepreneurship is also addressed in various projects. For instance, students are involved in the organization of their music, dance, and theatre festivals. Fashion students develop their collections, which are sold under the name Collectie Arnhem.
