The Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK) trains students for the national and international world of art, culture, and heritage. The AHK stands for educational excellence. In supporting exceptionally talented students in developing their artistic identity and cultivating an innovative vision, our outstanding tutors provide a solid grounding in skills and tradition, in collaboration with the international trend-setting cultural community of which Amsterdam is the center. The Conservatorium van Amsterdam, the Netherlands Film Academy, the Academy of Theatre and Dance, the Reinwardt Academy, the Academy of Architecture, and the Breitner Academy together form the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK).
The Amsterdam University of the Arts is constantly innovating and developing. It occupies a prominent place nationally and internationally in education, the arts, and cultural life. The courses are given in desirable locations in Amsterdam, the cultural center of the Netherlands. The AHK offers courses at bachelor and advanced or master level in the following subjects: fine art and design, music, film, theatre, dance, museology, architecture, and arts education.
The Amsterdam University of the Arts has a highly international student population; more than a quarter of the students are from outside the Netherlands. The international students are already experiencing the richness and challenges of studying in a culturally and artistically different environment than their home country. For those international students who still feel the need to explore their boundaries during their study at the AHK, participation in student exchange programs like Erasmus can help them fulfill their needs.
The Amsterdam University of the Arts offers its international students two possibilities to finance a short study or internship abroad. The student exchange program from the European Union (the Erasmus program) aims to stimulate students to study or do an internship in another EU country. The AHK has several bilateral agreements with the guest institutions in Europe.
The AHK believes it is essential that you, as a student, can study safely and healthily. That is why there are not only student counselors and confidential advisers waiting to help you, but we also have a Study + Disability coordinator who can provide you with personal guidance. Besides, we offer training courses for all our students in planning and time management, and we organize a study-related stress/ fear of failure training course.
The AHK introduced a new, university-wide corporate identity in the 2007-2008 academic year. The corporate identity was developed by the Amsterdam design firm Thonik. The corporate identity offers a balance between joint and separate profiling. The point of departure is that the rich culture and tradition of the different constituent parts of the AHK are preserved. The diverse identities of the different study programs together determine the face of the AHK. The AHK is always visible but does not come to the fore.
The Amsterdam University of the Arts has an organizational structure appropriate to the different faculties' extraordinary and unique qualities. This is partly due to the different nature of the artistic and cultural disciplines in which they provide training and the consequences of that for the teaching organization, and partly because each of them has a very different background from the others. Since the faculties relate in the first instance to the present and future students, to the graduates, to the (guest) tutors, and professional practice, there is a strong bond between these groups and the teaching organization, which can react with alertness to new developments.
An enterprising attitude is critical for a successful start in professional practice. The study programs at the AHK have anchored entrepreneurial skills and preparation for entrepreneurship within education in various ways. More than half of the AHK alumni start off being self-employed/freelance immediately after their study program. Also, many alumni work with short-term employment contracts. An enterprising attitude is, therefore, essential for a successful start in professional practice. Entrepreneurship is a broad term. The study programs at the AHK have anchored entrepreneurial skills and preparation for entrepreneurship within education in various ways.
