The university was established in 1888 under the name Nara Normal School for Teachers and has continued providing education for over 120 years, with its name changing to Nara University of Education along the way.

The International Student House provides both a study and living environment for Japanese male students and international students of the Nara University of Education. The south wing and the north wing were constructed between September 1993 and March 1994 for education, research, and international exchange promotion. This house has 40 single rooms for international students, with regular curriculum students being allowed to stay here for up to 2 years. Research students who enter directly from overseas and those who have to relocate from another place in Japan to commute to the university are allowed to stay here for up to 6 months. Once these time limits have been reached, students have to leave the house. The lodging fee per month is about 20,000 yen, including the cost of utilities.
