In an environment surrounded by abundant nature and mild climate in Southern Kyushu, the Minami Kyushu University provides the students with the education to be a person with creativity, humanity, and good social skills. As well, the university is engaged in the primary and applied study for "food," "green," and "people" to develop human resources that will contribute to society in the specialized fields.
We are now facing diversified problems attributed to human beings' existence, such as environmental issues, expanded social gaps, an increase in poverty, and an aging society. Furthermore, by suffering from an unprecedented scale of damage after the Great East Japan Earthquake, we are now demanded to get rid of an old sense of world and sense of value, that is, "only the continued economic development will bring us a rich society ."Since its foundation in 1967, Minami Kyushu University has been committed to agriculture, food, health, and education. And I believe that the abundant experiences and our achievement at Minami Kyushu University will inspire us to make a breakthrough in contemporary Japanese society's critical issues.
Various events throughout the year will be an excellent experience for the student's personal growth. Beginning with a welcome event for freshmen, an open campus, on-site training, and the climactic "Kirishima Festival" on Miyazaki Campus and "Hibari Festival" on Miyakonojo Campus all provide excellent opportunities for meeting new people, challenging something new, and personal growth.
At Minami Kyushu University, we have engaged in the characteristic education focusing on horticulture and gardening for more than 40 years. The Miyakonojo Campus that was newly opened in 2009, offers an excellent educational environment where the students learn to become a creating specialist involved in vegetation, equipped with sensibility and scientific knowledge, and a deep understanding of the importance of coexisting with nature and creatures.
The department consists of 5 significant fields specified on pages 4 and 5. Our educational policy enables the students to extend their intellectual antenna in multiple directions.
The student labs are where they practice the knowledge and technologies learned in the classrooms as a practicum. They are organized by different areas, such as horticultural production environment, plant bio, breeding, and natural environmental system. The labs are equipped with modern facilities, including a DNA sequencer for gene analysis, high-performance liquid chromatography for botanical ingredient analysis, and element analysis equipment essential for the environmental analysis.
