The University of Applied Sciences Wurzburg-Schweinfurt, or FHWS, is one of the most prominent universities of applied sciences in Bavaria. FHWS was founded in 1971 with two locations that are thriving to this day - in Wurzburg and Schweinfurt.
FHWS's ten faculties offer more than 40 bachelor's and master's degree programs. The comprehensive and forward-looking programs cover technology, economics, social sciences, computer sciences, visual design, and language. Studying at FHWS is characterized by a particular orientation towards application. A practical semester, project work, and a high share of practical work in laboratories and seminars underline the importance of a practice-oriented approach at FHWS. Students are perfectly prepared for their future working life and the demands of the labor market.
At universities of applied sciences, research is crucial to teach the state of art in technology and science. New technologies and scientific developments following the research activities of our professors are implemented into teaching. Research activities are undertaken in cooperation close to practice with regional companies and institutes and national and international research projects.
In many FHWS laboratories, students can apply to practice and intensify skills and knowledge previously acquired theoretically. Moreover, in six institutions of FHWS, research is additionally fuelled. As part of the research map of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK), FHWS defines two main research areas: Energy technology and efficiency and mobility and people.
FHWS focuses on internationalization as its differentiation strategy and has set itself to be an international university where students from many different nations learn and study together. To accomplish this, FHWS has introduced an award-winning model of degree programs unique in Germany. There, bachelor's programs taught in English are offered as Twin-Programmes that are identical to their German equivalent. Thus, students can switch between the degree program taught in English and the one taught in German during their course of studies. Besides, FHWS is part of a worldwide network of about 140 international partner institutions where FHWS-students can do a semester abroad.
Digitalization is changing the world of work and will gain further importance in the future. FHWS is embracing this development by its digitalization strategy. It includes a view outside, towards its students and imparting the related competence, and a view inside that is promoting digitalization within the organizational structure of FHWS. Additionally, FHWS is a member of the Centre for Digital Innovations Mainfranken (ZDI), supporting and encouraging digital business start-ups.
The FHWS Campus for Professional Development and Language Proficiency is cooperating with companies and international higher education institutions to offer an innovative and practice-oriented program in different disciplines geared toward individuals, companies, and staff members at FHWS interested in continuing education.
As part of their Commitment to Innovation agreed to and signed by the University of Applied Sciences of Wurzburg-Schweinfurt (FHWS) and the Bavarian State Ministry of Education, Science and Art on 8 July 2013 to guarantee and improve the quality and performance of universities in Bavaria.
In 2012, FHWS created a new vision statement, defining additional elements that distinguish FHWS from other universities and setting objectives for our improvement and development. We are devoted to achieving our new goals and objectives, which set the benchmark against which the University's performance can be measured. FHWS's vision means "networking." We strive to build and maintain a strong network of contacts allowing students to exchange information and share their experience with other students and connect with professional contacts at home and abroad. To advance our vision, we decided to become more international and engage in research involving technology transfer. Our innovative approach to achieving these goals will be our crucial differentiator among universities in Bavaria and make Bavaria more attractive for students worldwide.
