One in every three Danes contract cancer at some point in their lives. Two in three have a relative suffering from cancer. Faced with these figures, the Danish Cancer Society aims to unite the Danish population in a robust and active effort against cancer.
The Danish Cancer Society has more than 400,000 members - and almost 45,000 volunteers doing what corresponds to around 870 full-time jobs. With around 690 full-time employees, the Danish Cancer Society, therefore, has more volunteers than employees.
We are a democratic membership organization, whose course is charted by the volunteers and members. The volunteers represent the highest authority of the Danish Cancer Society. They elect the president, set the Society's rules and regulations, and identify our main focus areas.
The Danish Cancer Society is a disease-combating association. The Danish Cancer Society works to be a voice for people living with cancer. Through research, prevention, and patient support, the Society fights to minimize the number of cancer cases, increase cancer survivors and optimize conditions for people living with cancer and their relatives to ensure the best life possible after cancer. The Danish Cancer Society's activities are based on the most reliable pool of knowledge available, a standard set of values, and everyday ethical basis, and popular support. Volunteering and financial support from the Danish population are the prerequisites for the Danish Cancer Society's research, prevention, and patient support activities. The government funds only a small portion of the Society's work in the form of public pools and lottery funds. The Danish Cancer Society is a free association based on membership and volunteering.
In 2016, almost 45,000 people volunteered for the Danish Cancer Society. This means that the number of volunteers has increased by some 22% since 2009. The number of hours that volunteers invest in their work is up about 104% since 2009. This equals roughly 869 full-time positions. That is about 200 more full-time positions than the number of employees at the Danish Cancer Society, which had 688 full-time employees on 31 December 2016. The significant increase in volunteering hours is mainly due to much greater involvement in Relay for Life, Pink Saturday, the Igen thrift shops, and patient support.
The Danish Cancer Society has local units in almost all municipalities in Denmark, with volunteers making a targeted effort to boost local cancer-policy efforts. Also, there are volunteers on the Society's five regional committees and the Central Board. The volunteering commitment in the Danish Cancer Society is reliable and robust. To ensure that this continues, the Society works to make it easier and more meaningful to be a volunteer. We need to develop new ways of involving volunteers, increasing diversity among volunteers, and strengthening our organizational democracy.
