The Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts (JAMU) is one of two music academies and the dramatic arts in the Czech Republic.

Although all degree programs at both faculties are taught in Czech, international students can study in English or German in the lifelong learning programs. JAMU can boast, at present, a relatively high number of international students (66) this figure includes students from the Slovak Republic. International students can study at either faculty, either free of charge as full-time students after they have successfully passed the entrance examination (the study programs are in Czech), or within the lifelong learning program, for which tuition fees are charged. For these students and the students in the SOCRATES/ERASMUS program, lessons in the Czech language are organized by JAMU.

At present, the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts has 42 partner institutions in the European Union, Eastern Europe, and the Far East countries. JAMU is a member of four major international networks:

    • ELIA (European League of Institutes of the Arts).
    • ENCATC (European Network of Cultural Administration Training Centres).
    • PROSPERO (European Network of Higher Vocational Education Institutes in the Performing Arts).
    • AEC (Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen).

The CHAIN program links 17 music universities. The main program at JAMU for teacher and student mobility is SOCRATES/ERASMUS. Brno offers a rich selection of cultural activities, for which students of JAMU are entitled to reduced admission prices and, in many cases, free admission. Of particular interest are the National Theatre (which has just celebrated its 120th season, and has drama, opera, and ballet companies), the Municipal Theatre and the Experimental Theatre Centre, which includes the Goose on a String Theatre and HaDivadlo besides, there are many other smaller companies, including puppet theatres and companies for children and young people. The major music company is the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, but the city also has scores of chamber ensembles, choirs, and other musical groups.

The JAMU Library mainly serves the teachers, students of the Faculty of Music, the Faculty of Theatre, and other professional public users. The library collection corresponds to study programs at both faculties (Art of Music, Dramatic Art, and Art of Dance). The library collection is focused on professional theatre, music and dance literature and partly on professional literature from related fields: art, history, and theory of film, history, and theory of literature, photography, fine arts, architecture, aesthetics, philosophy, pedagogy, sociology, poetry and prose literary works, opera librettos, language textbooks and texts, language dictionaries, sheet music, 50 titles of periodicals, audiovisual works, sound recordings, gramophone records and students theses and publications of the JAMU Publishing Centre. Access to electronic information resources is ensured from the library website.

The JAMU Library uses the Aleph library system – OPAC (online public access catalog). The library provides regular services: loan services (borrowing and renewing of items), reference services, interlibrary loans, information retrievals. There are five computers with access to the Internet connection (and OPAC) in the study room, and there is access to the Internet with a Wi-Fi connection. There is also a CD player, a DVD player, and a record player.

The library offers information education to first-year students and students Ph.D. students and also offers formal editing of students theses. The library participates in providing sheet music for students' concerts and performances. The collection of photographic documentation of JAMU is part of the library. Its task is to collect documentation of students' performances of the Faculty of Music and the Faculty of Theatre since 1949. Continuous digitization has been going on.

Brno and its surroundings are rich not only in many different museums, monuments, theatres, cinemas, and clubs but also the beautiful countryside. You will find many sports grounds, three indoor swimming pools, and many open-air swimming pools, tennis and squash courts, and fitness centers.

Brno and its surroundings are rich not only in many different museums, monuments, theatres, cinemas, and clubs but also the beautiful countryside. All necessary information concerning leisure time activities can be found on the Internet.

It is named after Leoš Janáček, one of the most distinguished composers in modern European music, who was its spiritual father. JAMU was founded in 1947 when the many years of effort connected at the beginning with the personality of Leoš Janáček finally bore fruit. However, the promising activities of the 1960s were suppressed during the years of Communist "normalization" in the 1970s and 1980s. It was only after 1989 that JAMU could once again move forward along a well-conceived path open to the latest developments in the performing arts.

Independent Music and Theatre Faculties were reestablished. Many professors who had been unable to teach were brought back, young teachers were admitted to the staff, new fields of study were introduced, and foreign contacts were initiated. The institution soon gained full recognition for its pioneering initiatives and impressive achievements. Honorary doctorates were awarded to the pianist Rudolf Firkušný (a native of Brno), the poet Ludvík Kundera, the playwright Václav Havel and the poet and actor Jiří Suchý. The promising developments initiated in the early 1990s have continued into the new millennium, and currently, JAMU has more than 500 students at its two faculties.
