The University College of Teacher Education Styria is a renowned, nationally, and internationally accredited public educational facility. It stands for professionalism in teaching.
The fields of study on offer are teacher education at the primary level (ages 6 to 10), at the secondary level (ages 10 to 18), and for vocational schools. There is also a comprehensive and wide range of further education and training courses for qualified teachers.
Teachers and administrative staff at the University College of Teacher Education Styria can go on Erasmus+ mobility trips in Europe and abroad (see list of partner institutions).
The University College of Teacher Education offers its students the possibility to gather experience abroad during their studies (stays of 6 to 12 months).
Our large-scale academic, social, and cultural program for our international students is impressive. They can start their semester at the University College of Teacher Education in the winter or the summer.
Our Come to Graz International Week focuses on strengthening existing cooperation, exploring new ways of collaboration, and boosting international mobility and internationalization at home.
The teacher training program for primary school trains for the profession as an elementary school teacher. It is a profession- and science-oriented education in the competencies necessary for the profession's practice and follows the picture of the specialized generalist. In addition to teaching technical, didactic and educational science skills, it refers to the core elements of the profession developed in the South-East Development Association, such as inclusive education with a focus on talent and disability, diversity with a focus on multilingualism, interculturality and interreligiousness, language and literacy, gender, Global Citizenship as well as Media and Digital Competences.
The Teacher Training Program Secondary General Education provides for teaching as a teacher in two general education subjects and entitles to employment at secondary schools AHS, NMS, or BMHS. It includes a 4-year Bachelor's and a 2-year Master's degree course in two freely selectable subjects. Students can choose from 24 subjects and two specializations.
Its goal is to provide an essential professional and science-oriented education in the competencies required for practicing the profession in the relevant subjects. Subject-related, subject-didactic, and educational content will be imparted. From the second semester onwards, teaching will be practiced at practice schools and optimized through reflection.
A completed admission procedure enables enrollment at one of the colleges or universities in the South-East Development Association. With the inscription at the University of Styria an automatic co-enrollment takes place at the University of Graz, Graz University of Technology, Graz University of Art and Design, KPH Graz, PH Carinthia, University of Klagenfurt and PH Burgenland, with which the complete teaching offer of these institutions is available.
The increasing demand for all-day care of pupils leads to a particular demand for pedagogically trained persons for the leisure time care of children and adolescents at all-day schools.
The college course recreational education offers the participants a comprehensive education in leisure pedagogical basics, in personality education and communication, diversity, art and creativity, music and sport, as well as the legal bases of the leisure pedagogy and school law. Besides, the practical work at schools with daycare is already planned during the course.
The goals of diversity and inclusion are of central concern to us, students with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and students with other first languages than German are welcome. The PH Steiermark is committed to the principles of self-determination, equality, and accessibility in all areas of life for people with disabilities. Therefore, it has set up the Service Center for Inclusive Studies. Specialists staff it. Its task is to advise all students and staff with disabilities and chronic illnesses as well as other first languages than German to support equal and equal access to all offers and services of the PH Steiermark.
We advise prospective students, students, and staff on all topics related to disability, chronic or mental illness, and studying at the PHSt. We advise on the fulfillment of the admission requirements and the distinctive design of the study program. We advise on possible assistance services with the goal of accessibility in the study as well as questions of curriculum or examination modifications according to the current study law. We advise and assist in the barrier-free design and adaptation of the building infrastructure as well as in the barrier-free transfer of information, e.g., in courses or the website of the PHSt.
