We are a Catholic school of just over 200 children located on the outskirts of Manchester City Centre. We pride ourselves on being a happy, caring, and welcoming community, where the learning environment and the wide range of opportunities offered, help every child reach their full potential and make the most of the gifts and talents are given to them by God. Our dedicated and committed team of clergy, staff, and governors work closely together to make sure that the children in our care are a respected part of our Christian community, one where they feel valued and secure. Our school is a Catholic Christian environment inspired by and rooted in, the values of the Gospel, where everyone is encouraged to grow in faith and moral responsibility. St Wilfrid’s is a Voluntary Aided Catholic School set in an environment which reflects the Christian Gospels and Teachings of the Catholic Church. As such, through its curriculum, extra-curricular activities, teaching, and learning this school will promote Christian and British values. By doing so, we will ensure that all learners understand the values that have traditionally underpinned British society. We will prepare pupils for life in England where the population has an increasingly rich diversity of backgrounds, origins, beliefs, and cultures by promoting the values on which our society has been built. By teaching pupils these values we will help all to become good citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The DofE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” St Wilfrid’s is a Roman Catholic Primary School in Hulme, close to the center of Manchester. We are one form entry and have a 26 place Nursery. The school is the only one in the Parish of St Augustine’s, Grosvenor Square. We are a friendly school with a strong commitment to ensuring that every child achieves high standards in all they do in school through providing a rich and stimulating curriculum. Our school motto is 'Care, Learn, Respect'.Over many years we have built a reputation in the local community for high standards and high expectations of children’s behavior. Our children are well motivated, confident, and eager to take on new challenges. We have a dedicated and enthusiastic team of Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Support Staff, and Governors who work together to create a school where everyone’s contribution is valued and children feel a sense of achievement and success. The pupil premium is a Government initiative that targets extra money at pupils from deprived backgrounds, which research shows underachieve compared to their non-deprived peers. The premium is provided to support these pupils in reaching their potential. The Government has used pupils entitled to Free School meals as an indicator for deprivation and has deployed a fixed amount of money to schools per pupil, based on the number of pupils registered for Free School meals. At St Wilfrid’s RC Primary School we will be using the indicator of those eligible for Free School meals as our target children to ‘narrow the gap’ regarding attainment. The Government is not dictating how schools should spend this money, but are clear that schools will need to employ the strategies that they know will support their pupils to increase their attainment, and ‘narrow the gap’. We are working hard to develop ways in which we can involve parents in their children's learning and make parents feel a part of the school. To recognize this we have been accredited the Leading Parent Partnership Award (LPPA). Welcome to St Wilfrid’s Church of England Primary School, where our caring and friendly atmosphere gives children a great start to their educational journey. We are at the heart of a close-knit community in Northenden, which includes our amazingly talented and hard-working pupils, dedicated, experienced staff, and an active Parent Teacher Association. As part of St James & Emmanuel Academy Trust, our Christian school exists to provide a welcoming environment in which everybody is cherished and challenged to fulfill their potential. At St Wilfrid’s, our aim is always to provide a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum that encourages a positive attitude to the learning process. We expect high standards in teaching, learning, and behavior, which rubs off on children who are nurtured to become confident, resilient, and, most of all, happy and secure at school. Our high-quality teaching of the core curriculum is supplemented by sports activities, music lessons, choirs, and clubs - we’re committed to encouraging children to discover their passions. And they feed off this sense of participation, be that in School Council, weekly class assemblies, or annual productions. St Wilfrid's CE Primary School is a one and half form entry primary school for children aged 4-11. Every September we welcome 45 children into our reception class - although high priority is given to children with Church connections, other local children are welcome and attend the school and nursery in significant numbers. In September 2018, the Trust Admissions Governing Body has agreed to increase the number of children to 50. St Wilfrid's CE Nursery is very fortunate to have a Nursery unit, as part of our Early Years education on site. We are proud of our school and all that we can offer. Our Nursery has a qualified teacher, together with two key workers. As well as a focus on social, physical and language development, there is a clear learning focus to all that takes place and we can have a structured and clear approach to the teaching of phonics. The progress children make in our nursery, both socially and academically is excellent and this ensures that the children have built an excellent foundation before starting school. The Nursery is staffed by a teacher and two teaching assistants. Like the main school, the Nursery children take part in Nursery Worship and Christian celebrations throughout the year, ensuring a strong Christian ethos throughout the school. Information about events can be found through the School’s weekly newsletter and the Nursery Weekly Letter (obtainable either from our Nursery Information Page or from the School Office entrance). You are always welcome in the Nursery. We hope that parents will join staff and children in visits and outings. We look forward to a long and successful partnership with you. St Wilfrid's joined St James and Emmanuel Academy on the 1st of July 2016. We are part of trust together with Didsbury CE Primary School and West Didsbury CE Primary School. St Wilfrid's is a one and a half form entry Church of England Primary school with an intake of 45 children each September. We also have a Pre- School Nursery which offers 15 hours per week placements and wraparound care. We have two Reception classes. The first school to serve the Northenden area was Sharston National School built in 1810 and later the Northenden National School was founded on the present Tesco site. After the closure of this school and Shadow Moss Primary School near Manchester Airport, St Wilfrid's Junior School was opened in 1961 as a two-form entry junior school. It consisted of eight classrooms, a large hall, a kitchen, and extensive playing fields. As a result of falling numbers in Northenden, in 1983 a merger took place between St Wilfrid's Juniors and Royle Green Infants. St Wilfrid's C of E Primary School was thus formed as a one-form entry school. However, in response to increased requests for places, a new 45 place nursery was opened, together with four new infant classrooms. This opened in January 1997 and the school became a one and a half form entry school. When parents come to St Wilfrid's CE Primary for the first time, we often hear them marveling at the caring, nurturing, family atmosphere. This is very much our vision - to grow a diverse and creative educational community where we encourage belonging and nurture believing: together becoming fulfilled and responsible members of God’s world. St Wilfrid’s Mission Statement states – ‘we strive to follow Christ’s example to always do our best and we feel that we can do this by having a strong partnership between home, school and the parish. We pride ourselves on the good behavior and strong relationships that the children have with their peers and adults in the school. St Wilfrid’s School is a voluntary aided Catholic primary school for children aged 4 years to 11 years of age. The nursery unit is non-denominational and has separate admissions criteria. St Wilfrid's RC Primary School opened as a one-form entry school in 1959 in Shawsdale Road on the First estate. Then in 2012, we had an exciting new build that will take us to a two-form entry primary school. Currently, there are two classes in each year group up to and including year 4. We have bright, cheerful classrooms, an ICT suite, library, and 2 halls used for both PE and lunch. We have large playgrounds and some super climbing frames. As a voluntary aided school we are part of the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham and we offer a moral education, which follows the teachings of the Church and encourages the children to grow in love and respect for one another and the world about them. Through a rich and varied curriculum, opportunities are provided for the children to develop lively and enquiring minds. They are encouraged to grow in confidence and maturity and develop relevant skills for the future. We help the children to consider world problems such as famines and disasters, environmental issues, and local concerns and we support their efforts to alleviate the suffering and hardships of others. St Wilfrid's is recognized as a National Healthy School, and we continually educate, encourage and support all of our children in living healthy lifestyles through eating, physical activity, emotional well-being, and PSHE (Personal, Social, and Health Education). This contributes significantly to providing all our children with the knowledge, understanding, skills, and attitudes to make decisions about being and staying safe while enjoying and achieving in what they do. We work with Evolve, a social impact company, to help provide children with high-quality PE lessons and a range of after-school clubs. As part of the Catholic Community, here at St Wilfrid’s, we try our very best to follow the teachings of the Gospel. Working in partnership with our families and parish, we strive to live together inside of school and outside of it too, as a loving community, interacting with others by following the example of Jesus. Each half term, using the Catholic Schools' Pupil Profile, we focus on a new Value and Virtue, learning about what they mean in our everyday lives and trying to demonstrate them. St Wilfrid’s caters to children from Nursery up to Year 6. The school also has the benefit of a dedicated group of support staff, working throughout the school, to help the children progress as much as possible throughout their time here.
