Wanstead High School is a thriving 11-18 comprehensive school in the heart of the community. Wanstead High School is at a really exciting time in its development. We have a very positive OFSTED report, improving results, and our staff is committed to doing the best for their students. In return, the students are keen to succeed. The key to successful secondary education is to offer a broad and balanced curriculum that is taught well, by subject specialists. That's what Wanstead High School is doing. We are also instilling our students with enquiring minds and strong, positive values that will help them to thrive. We provide a very strong core of traditional subjects, from Year 7 up to A level, as well as a huge breadth of choice, with some amazing facilities in Performing Arts and Sports. In addition to learning in the classroom, our students also have access to a huge spectrum of extra-curricular activities ranging from after-school clubs to residential trips abroad. Wanstead High School is a thriving and happy school. Our goal is to liberate the potential of all students to aspire, achieve and succeed in their learning. We work together to ensure a first-class education for our students in a safe and caring environment. Our philosophy, which underpins all that we do, is that all children can be successful learners. We have a very successful academic record and we provide excellent opportunities for personal, social, and moral development through our curriculum, the performing arts, and our International School status. The high levels of creativity across the school have been recognized in our achievement of Artsmark Gold on four successive occasions. Our students achieve success in fields as diverse as sports, the arts, and competitive debating. We also offer a comprehensive range of extra-curricular activities such as the World Challenge expedition. The quality of relationships between students and staff at Wanstead High School is exceptional. We work together to ensure that our students enjoy their time with us, developing as confident learners and caring members of our local community. Support is largely provided in class. We work with all teachers in our school to provide access to the curriculum for students who require help. Where appropriate, students may work in small groups but support is, as far as possible, tailored to meet individual needs and takes place in class. We aim to develop independent young people ready for the next stage in their lives whether that is for work, further study, or apprenticeships. We believe in partnership working with parents – we value the input of parents and aim to work with them to achieve the best outcomes for their sons/daughters. This is a successful and forward-moving school although there is always more than we can achieve and improve on for our children. Whilst it may be a very different place than when the school was first created in 1790, there are still many traditions and parts to it that hold to its founding aims. At Wanstead Church School we want children to love reading - to enjoy books and to want to read - as well as learning to read. Within a broad and rich literacy curriculum, we teach reading through English lessons with reading-focused learning objectives and daily guided reading sessions. As the Church of England School of the Parish of Wanstead, we seek to work in partnership with home and church to offer excellence in education rooted in the Christian Faith. We seek to serve and nurture all the children in our care that they may realize their full potential. It is our aim that every child at our school is valued as a person created in the image of God. Pastoral care is our top priority. Wanstead Church School is one form primary school, with one class per year group. The Early Years Foundation Stage provision includes a Nursery where children attend on a part-time basis. Partnership with parents or carers plays a key role in enabling pupils and young people with special educational needs and disabilities to make good progress in all areas of the school curriculum. The school recognizes that parents or carers hold key information and have knowledge and experience to contribute to the shared view of a pupil’s needs and the best ways to support them. All parents or carers of pupils with SEND will be valued as partners and supported to play an active and valued role in their pupil’s education.
